Confused by Laser Nation's switching

I got an email from the Lasers and I assume every other team attending their tournament did as well, that they are switching from ASA sanction to NSA. Why would Laser Nation go from an ASA sanctioned tournament to an NSA sanctioned tournament? Why not make the whole tournament a PGF event? You could keep the same format and those that want to play for a nationals bid to California, let them do so. With the rest of the tournament, set it up as Midwest Regional bid. Switching to NSA, what some may consider a dying sanction in Ohio, seems just plain silly.

Is ASA attempting to black ball PGF tournaments by threatening umpires that they won't umpire another ASA tournament if they switch over to PGF? Is ASA threatening tournament directors with the same thing? I'm curious as there seems to be a sudden switch of tournaments deciding to go the PGF route what are the consequences of such?

I'm not attacking anyone and only throwing out some possible scenarios in the search for the truth.

Copy of email is below....

"We have had a quality tournament and are doing what we need to do in order to maintain and even improve it. We are open to your suggestions. I sent a recent email where I mentioned that I like it when there are many games, good competition, no admission or parking fees, no extra hotel costs, many teams so you can see and play against a variety of teams, etc. That is what we are going to do again this year. One problem we had last year was getting enough umpires. In a couple age groups the umpire scheduler could only get one umpire for many pool games. The umpire scheduler said that it was difficult because of another tournament that had been in existence for many years. I found out that our tournament is on the same weekend as that one again. At first I thought that they could get enough umpires this year, but they seemed to complain that we had too many teams. And, we have increased the number of teams this year to over 150. I did not know how many teams that other tournament had until this year (they have about 100). So, to make sure we could get two umpires for each game, I checked into getting another umpire scheduler. They said that they could provide enough umpires for how many teams we have, so we asked them to get umpires for us. That was not my original intent, but it looked like the best (or possibly only) way to go to make sure that we could get two umpires for each game. Therefore we have switched from being ASA to NSA. There won?t be many differences. We already used NSA type rules such as being able to bat more than 9, being able to rotate those batters in defensively, and having the last out being a courtesy runner for the pitcher and the catcher. Besides, there could be a benefit. There is one berth for every 4 teams in our tournament for their nationals. Teams need to sanction with NSA if they have not already done so. My guess is that most teams already sanction with NSA each year. It is a fairly simple two step process. Go to www.playnsa.com. (1) - Click on Coaches at the top, and then click on how to register (if you need to better understand it) or click on register. You will put in your team contact information. It will tell you who to register with (your state or area director) and how. (2) - They will send you a sanction number by email. You will use that sanction number and the password you already selected to put your roster online and then you can print it. I can give you a more detailed explanation of how to register that was sent to me if you want it. I might send it later anyhow just to make sure everyone understands. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call me (Jeff Cavanaugh) at 419-294-3265 or email me. Thanks for your participation and for your understanding."

My take is is is just as they stated; there is a large tourny (westerville warcat) going on at the same time which uses Asa umpires. So it seems in order to field 2 umps per game, NSA is able to provide the numbers needed.

I have no reason to believe anything other than what was stated in the email that is above.

A shortage of quality ASA umpires for this event...I have seen umpire issues a lot over the past 10 years...

We have played in several NSA events down south TENN. the past three years (some that had a decent amount of Ohio umpires) we never had a problem with NSA.
They were well managed tournaments and good umpiring... I would expect the same at this event especially since it is a showcase event...

The only minor thing I see is an additional $25 sanction fee since this will be our only NSA event...

On a side note...A lot of organizations/sanctioning bodies are buying for the softball dollar... Some are requiring sanctioning and profiles through them others offer training or individual opportunities or are having a WS format at the end of the year for those that participate in there events throughout the summer in order to get teams to attend their events...
All state they have the ear of college coaches ;&

Westerville Warcats tournament been around nearly 30 years. Just not enough umpires to cover both tournaments. This was an issue last year and should have been addressed before taking entries this year. I agree
with 1st poster why not make it all PGF.

I would like for it to PGF also, not at all thrilled with it being NSA.

However, if they can't get enough umpires from ASA which has been in Ohio for years…how could they get enough umpires from PGF which has been in Ohio for about 5 minutes now?

This will cost teams some money and most teams are on a budget. It is BS period. Umpires in our area do ASA, NSA, and USSSA games. Tournament dates were out a long time ago. ???? Why not make it all PGF?

Could it be... Lasers did not want to force a team to have to get registered / buy insurance for PGF if team was only going to one PFG event this year?????

My DD team went to ONLY one PGF tournament event last year and it was extremely costly to attend (insurance / etc.). Maybe they are looking out for the Ohio teams attending.... Teams more likely to have registered NSA than PGF... No additional cost to the team???? Where if it is PGF, teams will have to pay additional registration and insurance cost???????

Pretty sure you only need the PGF Insurance if it is a PGF National Qualifier, which I know they are offering the same weekend. But the suggestion in the original post was to run a PGF Regional Qualifier alongside the PGF National Qualifier instead of running a NSA tournament alongside a PGF National Qualifier. PGF Insurance wouldn't be needed for the PGF Regional Qualifier portion.

Exactly, looking at the PGF section on this site, there are 4 or 5 tourneys listed as regional qualifiers that you do not have to sanction for PGF this year. Just seems like the Lasers took a step backwards listing this as a NSA tourney instead of going to a full PGF tourney. The Lasers were the first to bring the PGF format listing into their tourney why not go all the way?

Keep this tournament NSA and I think this tournament will start losing the excellent teams as NSA continues to decline in Ohio.

My question is, where are these NSA umpires coming from? I know there are a few NSA tourneys in Central Ohio, but if you look in the back of these umpires vehicles you see there ASA gear, next to their NSA gear, whcih is sandwiched between their USSSA gear!!! If all the ASA umpires are gone, and I feel pretty certain there are no where near enough NSA umpires in the central Ohio area, where are they coming from? If they are traveling from different states, then find other ASA umpires from other places.

We aren't going to Lasers, so maybe I should keep my mouth shut, but I refuse to play in any N$A tourneys and would be P$%#@d to be informed this far along that we now have to re-sanction to play in the tourney!!!

So N$A is telling the TD of the Lasers tourney that we can supply umpires but you have to have them register N$A. It's still about the money with N$A!!! How about supplying the umpires and keep it ASA!!! As I stated earlier, their ASA gear is right next to their NSA gear!!!

Maybe someone will create another sanction called "ExtremeTeams", (Acronym ET) so all these excellent teams from out of this world have a place to play under a sanction that will never decline in popularity. There are also a lot of teams/coaches and organizations that are not real happy with ASA, USSSA, Ect;;; but I bet they will play under any one of these sanctions as long as the tournament offers what they willing to pay for.

Not true. Only a handful of our officials work ASA at all and that number declines more and more each year as we keep adding tournaments. We have no officials that work USSSA at all as they are not driving to Toledo or Beavercreek to work it when there are events in there backyard they can work.

My question to you Lady Knights is this: Why would the NSA actively recruit and sign up and then supply officials to work another sanctioning bodies event? Do you think the ASA or USSSA would sign up officials to come in for one weekend to work for us? Would they let them take the field without paying their sanctioning fees or having proper uniform on? We certainly will not let officials take the field for one of our events without paying their fees or having proper attire due to the lack of professionalism it presents. Plus it puts the officials who have paid their sanctioning fee in a potential liability situation along with the TD if just one official working has not paid their sanction.

And it is not about the money with the NSA: It is about doing it the correct way so the TD and officials are not put in harms way in reference to liability. This means the teams also have to be sanctioned and turn in a signed roster along with proof of insurance or they are not permitted to play. It can be any sanctioning bodies insurance carrier as long as the policy shows the team as the insured. They will also sign the new Ohio concussion law waiver.

If we were all about the money, we would insist that teams purchase our coverage to be eligible to compete in our events and Worlds. We don't do that. If it was all about the money we would have never went to an entry fee 5 years ago that incorporated the gate fee into it. We have been $600 - gate included for our World Series since 2008. Others are copying it, but we were one of the first to implement it.

I think you guys are missing the point here which Mike with the Diamonds has tried to bring home: The sanction does not make the event. The tournament organization and staff itself is what makes it an event to play in. We will put our very best on the event as we have very capable officials that weekend willing to work their butts off and the Lasers will work their behinds off to make it the must-play event it is every year. We are glad that Jeff and the Lasers organization chose us to partner up with as this is one of the marquee events in the entire state.

I agree.

If you can get past the minor differences - number of batters, DP, Flex, fees, whatever... - It 's still 3 strikes make an out, 3 outs = 1/2 inning, and whoever crossses the plate the most times wins. Any sanctioning body can make a good tournament if they know what they're doing.

$25 sanctioning fee is only $1-3 per player... a hot dog or 2 walking taco's is the impact and I for one could avoid both and not feel the financial hurt. Budget, yes... a change mid-stream "again"... that's a different story.

At the end of the day, yes, the Lasers will run another solid tournament with strong teams and the cost of the entire event vs the amount of softball per dollar is still maximized. Laser's Gray has kept fileds top notch even though at a local school. I can tell you our local school fields (non-varsity, JV, freshman) are terrible and my hat is off to those parents year-after-year.

So, my other thought is maybe teams would have avoided NSA for "their" reasons and went to Shreve or NKY to get a shot at the ASA/USA berth that same weekend. Set the tournament info at the outset and and stick to it. In this case, probably won't matter for the team list will hopefully hold true.

Another question, if it went PGF... where do those umpires come from? Are their enough to cover the games this early in the Ohio PGF adolescence in Ohio? My thought is probably not (in this quantity) so NSA may be the best way to get solid umpire coverage for a large list of traveling teams from afar and to accommodate legit games.

Will this cause teams to drop... then if they do, who's left? Lasers is a premier event, hope it stays that way for 2013. Long term, I'm betting it does.

Yes, and Yes. This just isn't happening in Ohio.
