Confused by Laser Nation's switching

I could care less who sanctions a non-qualifying tournament and where the umpires come from as long as they put on a quality event. I would assume if a team wants to drop out because of it changing, they would have the right to do so, but it's hard for me to imagine that a $25 sanction fee would drive someone to switch. And yes, there's no doubt that ASA and PGF are "at war" in Ohio ... it's kind of interesting that NSA may have benefitted from it in this case.

Are you saying it is not about the money with ASA, USSSA, PONY, etal?

My question is, where are these NSA umpires coming from? I know there are a few NSA tourneys in Central Ohio, but if you look in the back of these umpires vehicles you see there ASA gear, next to their NSA gear, whcih is sandwiched between their USSSA gear!!! If all the ASA umpires are gone, and I feel pretty certain there are no where near enough NSA umpires in the central Ohio area, where are they coming from? If they are traveling from different states, then find other ASA umpires from other places.

We aren't going to Lasers, so maybe I should keep my mouth shut, but I refuse to play in any N$A tourneys and would be P$%#@d to be informed this far along that we now have to re-sanction to play in the tourney!!!

So N$A is telling the TD of the Lasers tourney that we can supply umpires but you have to have them register N$A. It's still about the money with N$A!!! How about supplying the umpires and keep it ASA!!! As I stated earlier, their ASA gear is right next to their NSA gear!!!

I'm trying to figure out what the big deal is??? Is it over $25 sanctioning fee for NSA? The point of playing in Lasers is for showcasing right?? I'd say that's worth the $25.

Our team chooses tournaments based on competition. We want to play the toughest teams we can as often as we can so we look for who's in it and who can draw the toughest teams. In my opinion, ASA usually draws stronger teams than NSA but if the stronger teams are already signed on...who cares what sanction it is. It is an excellent showcase tournament whether it is ASA, NSA or PGF.

Is ASA attempting to black ball PGF tournaments by threatening umpires that they won't umpire another ASA tournament if they switch over to PGF?

I have NEVER had an ASA representative or official make any threats of this nature.

I am in the central district, so I am in the group of umpires who have normally covered this tournament and am directly affected by a switch of sanctions. To date, no ASA representative or official has discussed, or even mentioned, PGF, NSA or this particular tournament with our umpiring association.

But conspiracy theories are always more entertaining than cold, hard facts...

I agree w/ some of the earlier posts...... what's the big deal? Still great competition right? That (IMO) is what its all about..... you'll get better by playing better competition. Who cares if its nsa, asa, pgf, or Ray Charles school for the blind sanctioning it. 25$ is nothing compared to what most teams(and parents) pour into travel ball.

To me the biggest issue is another switch midstream. I choose tournaments for many reasons including competition. But I choose not to play NSA for my personal reasons. Now Im forced to play NSA. Maybe if this was advertised NSA in September I would have still chosen to play due to the competition but I didnt have the choice. Again as I said earlier this was an issue last year and should have been corrected before advertising the tournament not after everyone had entered.

Did you just say you put your personal issues ahead of what is best for the team?

When it comes to NSA yes. I tell my parents upfront what type of schedule we are going to play and it doesnt usually include NSA. Its my decision on schedule. I said personal because I didnt want to get into bashing NSA on here. Im actually VERY long time friends with Mike and we have talked about issues many times.

And I dont think my parents have any problems with our schedule

Do you still have to attend NSA states to keep your national bid?

I think biggest effect will come not from teams there NSA umpires in my personal experience are every bit as good as Asa.... In my experience the one reason it will affect some teams is because of pick up players but is what is I like mike and like change

It is supposed to be. I am just a lowly state director so I can't vouch for other areas of the country.

I know in our Zone, teams have been told in the past that because they didn't play the state they were not eligible to participate in the World Series. And then their state director who sent them without checking to see if they met the requirements was reprimanded by the higher-ups.

I wish it was different because I think more teams from Ohio would participate. As long as Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois have state tournaments with over 100+ teams, or North/South or East/West states with significant turnouts it is just swimming against the current right now when I bring it up at our meetings.

Really - everywhere in NSA?

How much money is it going to cost you to drop out of this tourney?
Do you think you are going to get a full refund?
Dream on.

No one here is picking on Mike. The question remains, Why would the Laser's choose to go NSA as opposed to switching over to a complete PGF event? Per this link alone http://www.thesoftballzone.com/vb3/...2-lasernation-pgf-qualifier-june-14-16-a.html, it doesn't make much sense to me. JP was asking teams to reconsider the PGF event. He had the perfect opportunity for PGF to slide into one of the biggest tourneys in the state and dropped the ball.
