The "Rules Change" rumor mill is churning

I don't know where this started. My daughter heard that a better will now be awarded first base on any hit-by-pitch even if she makes no attempt to get out of the way. Supposedly, this is across the board - OHSAA, NCAA, ASA, etc...

I find it strange, but my daughter is always right - and parents are always wrong .

What do the experts say?

I haven't heard anything but that's already pretty much the case depending on where you are. I witnessed several players this year just stand there....no even flinch.....and get awarded the base. :0

Oh BTW.....I'm not one of the experts! ;)

We had one instance this year where it was a slow change up and it hit my batter and the ump didn't award the base. I agreed with the call, she had plenty of time to get out of the way and she didn't move. At the same time I had a player get hit in the head 3 times in 2 weeks and one time the ump called it a foul ball and said it hit the bat first. She wasn't swinging at the time and had the mark on her helmet from the ball.

I don't think the rule should change if that is the case. Make the batters have to move or show effort and not just take a ball to get on base.

This rule was changed a few years ago in NCAA baseball. If the pitch is inside the batter's box the batter need not make any effort to avoid it to be awarded first base.

In their Rules Committee meeting last month, NCAA softball adopted this same rule. Again, this applies only to pitches that are inside the confines of the batter's box.

I have not heard anything about any organizations below NCAA adopting this rule. The ASA meetings are in November and, at this point, no one knows what rule changes will even be proposed and voted on, let alone passed. The NFHS meetings were last month and they did not change their rule for 2012.
