Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Thoughts on indoor pitching/hitting leagues

My daughter is a pitcher and will be moving up to 12U next season. Thinking about doing a indoor pitching/hitting league this fall, I was hoping this will help her adjust to ball size and pitching distance. For those of you who have participated in this type of league, do you believe that it is beneficial?

I am interested in also hearing about these leagues. My daughter is only 7 but will be 8 in the fall. She lives to play softball! Therefore trying to find one in Stark County and also a fall softball league she can partcipate in. I am having a hard time b/c she is not 8 yet locating either of these for her.

Fall is the best time to play outdoor IMO. Indoor is more of a winter thing. I'd find a good fall league and let her play outdoor, even if it is rec league, at that young of an age.

Thanks she definitely wants to play in the fall also and then indoor in the winter. But at her age I am having a hard time finding any team for her to play on for fall or winter? If you or anyone else could help me that would be great. Fall ball/winter ball anything she lives to play lol. I am in stark county canton/jackson area.

Is she doing this as a recreational activity (being with friends, just for the fun of it, etc.) or does she have goals set for improvement? Both fall ball and indoor can be either, it just depends on what you want to get out of it.

I have no idea what level of play she is now, or what level she has goals for. If she is determined to "be the best she can be" I would assume she has a qualified instructor. During lessons with her instructor, she can be shown the specifics of the mechanics of different pitches, different ways to get better spin, mental approach, and much more. Then, a great venue to "test" those things is a relaxed game atmosphere, such as fall ball and indoor. It's the simple concept of "teach, assess, correct". A weekly lesson, followed by practice and self assessment. Go back to her instructor with feedback on how things are working out. She can even keep a little diary at each indoor session to help jog her memory at her next lesson. Have her set realistic goals for herself during this time, with the help of her instructor.

You will be amazed at how fast she progresses when you approach it with a plan and goals!

Thankyou for your insight. Yes she did recreational ball this spring. She is 7 years old(turning 8 in the fall) and very serious about being the best she can be. I have two daughters that play. Her older sister is out there having fun socializing etc. Which is great, but has no desire to do more than spring ball which is fine also. Her on the otherhand wants to play and learn. She definitely has the ability given the right instructor program to be the best she can be and build on her skills.

This is all new to me b/c my oldest never had a desire to do anymore than play in the spring. Therefore, I am looking for anything she can play in right now at her age in the fall/ winter for the expierence. Also, if you have any instructors you can recommend in Stark county that would be great. We are in the Jackson/massillon/canton area.

Thanks again for replying.

After posting sorry not sure if you were responding to me or first poster or both? Sorry not trying to hijack thread, lol.

Anyway, I don't think you'll find an indoor pitching/hitting league in the fall. We haover, have participated for years in the Grand Slam Indoor pitching/hitting leagues in the Columbus over winters area and have found it very beneficial to, if nothing else, keep it going through the winter months. Depending on skill level, may need to play up though.

Actually, my post was for the original poster, but hey... I'm not selfish! It's just general information. Stark County is known to be an old hotbed of softball activity - there are MANY fine orgs in that area. If someone doesn't chime in, I'd be glad to look up something for you. ;)

As a footnote, I'm not a big fan of fall ball. But to each their own. My DD was a pitcher, and got her belly full of competitive softball for a nearly 8 month stretch every year. We chose to take breaks, do other sports, recuperation and training for those other 4 months. That doesn't mean she didn't throw at all - just not in game situations. :)

Sammy and fastpitchrox, thank you for your replies. DD is a second year 10U travel player, and a 1st year pitcher. She does take pitching instruction.

Sammy, we never thought about keeping a diary/journal, that is a great idea. We are going to implement it!

Fastpitchrox, we were actually looking into Grand Slam in Dublin. She played up at 12U last year for their outdoor fall league, we were not impressed. This year's indoor pitching/hitting league takes place Nov-Dec. I'm relieved to hear that you have participated and found it to be beneficial. Our goal is to get DD acclimated to a 12" ball, and give her an opportunity to pitch against a live hitter. I needed to determine if an indoor pitching/hitting league was worth her time.
