Try-out or not try-out that is the question???

My daughter has been on the same team for a few years now and we are thinking of changing teams and also putting our younger daughter that is new to travel ball on a new team as well hopefully the same organization. I have contacted a few teams and read a few try-out posts on here. My main question is why would teams not tell you who the coaches are going to be for the season. I can understand if they have not chosen a head coach but if you have appointed a coaching staff then what is the big secret. I had a coach point blank tell me "if you want to know who's coaching, come to the try-outs and find out." I not only found this rude but also I felt they are hiding something. So should I go with my gut and move on or still go to these try-outs? Both of my daughters are really not studs and they do not pitch. So that is why I was checking out new teams. But I am not sure if it is worth it. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I would say do tryout for different teams. As far as that coaching thing, Teams should be able to tell you who the coaches are in advance. Even if its not posted ( THEY STILL KNOW).

If a coach cannot be completely honest up front, and holding any secrets, then why would you give them a chance. ?:-? ?If you know that going in then you can't complain about then holding secrets later. I say if they got something to hide I don't want no part of it. Honesty and communicaton goes a long way in my book.

Every girl deserves to play on a team that is there for her. If they cannot tell me who the coaches are, then they don't deserve to know who my daughter is. There are plenty of teams out there that will give you the respect that you deserve. I am up front and honest with everyone on my team. That is the way it should be.

It sound like you arent happy with the situation you are currently in, so my advice would be go to different tryouts and talk to other people and coaches to see what may be the best fit for your daughters. It may be where you are and it may not. Good Luck to you.

All good questions. I don't know where your from but the Ohio Hawks have a few first year teams and we have disclosed all of our coaches. All spots are open on our first year teams and we would be happy to talk to talk to anyone that is interested. www.ohiohawks.com is our site

if you felt the org was being rude, then by all means go with your gut...we were not sure last year who was coaching (or if the org was having a team in that age division) but everything ended up working out allright. go with your gut, most of the time, it isn't wrong.

beats being on a team with ringer ::) :p ;D :D ;)

Just a scenario but what if the new coach has daughters in a different organization and plans to leave the organization at the end of the year to take an opportunity to coach in a new program, and all the while his daughters are playing in Nationals or whatever with their current organization,....perhaps to best wait for the season to end to announce he is leaving one organization for another. I dunno just a thought!!! I think their are different scenarios for every situation and not everyone is trying to be deceitful....kinda like is your cup half empty or half full!

Viper 14, Yeah I kind of thought that way at first with the one brand new travel team, but he told me his dd was done for the season. So just kind of wierd I guess... I guess I should steer clear.

It is one thing to say "Show up at the tryouts and see" and it is another to just say, we do have a coach but cannot release his name yet. I have the hardest time trying to figure out why alot of these teams have a hard time with the most important part of a organization........COMMUNICATION. Its like you are on a need to know bases. It would be very hard for me to recommend a team that cannot communicate. JMO

Nationals have been over for a while, I am not sure that this would be a reason.

My suggestion is if you are not comfortable with the answers you are getting right now, then trust me it does not get better as the season goes on. Everybody is in the lovefest mode right now. Everything is rosey and the outlook could not be brighter. I suggest that you consider this as you decided where your daughters will be spending thier spring and summer. just MHO

Sometimes it is difficult to find a coach for a team. They may still be looking.

If they're still looking or not sure, why don't they just say so? "come to the try-outs and find out." isn't a good answer. And, if they don't know, how do they know it'll be settled by try-outs?

Dervish...maybe they don't want some people to know who the coaches are :-? If you are that curious, go to the tryout and find out for yourself ;D

good stuff ringer.

Maybe they are not telling you who the coaches are because they want to go to other tryouts with their kids and try to recruit player under the radar. I do not know why they would not disclose the coaches name, it is not like they are going to trap and keep you just because you go to tryouts.

Who knows but hopefully statmen and Ringer can keep us interested because things will soon slow down after tryouts.

My question to you would be, Did you have a bad season? How were the coaches during the season? If they seemed shady then.....

IMHO go to all the tryouts you can. It doesn't hurt to get out there and see what other teams are looking for and where your dd may fit. Sometimes you will find a better situation for her.

After a comment like that, I really wouldn't care who the coach was.

whirling d,..There's a lot of good reasons why an organization may not know who the coach is going to be. It could be a coach moving up with his daughter, a coach simply hanging it up, maybe that team has a tournament after Nationals and the coach has let the organization know he's leaving but doesn't want anything said to the team, and so on. I would ask the organization head for that information and if that person can not be upfront with you about the situation, than you just move on. They should be able to tell you honestly and then just ask for your discretion. They may have a coach coming from another organization and they don't want to say anything until he or she has formally cut ties with the other organization. I hope you weren't told to 'JUST SHOW UP" by an organization official, I hope it was just a parent of a player who was being indifferent to your situation. There really are many legitimate reasons an organization may not have that information for you right when you ask, however, there's no legitimate raeson for them not to be honest about it.
