Try out question

Can you all give me an idea on which position my 11yr old DD should tryout for this year? She can pitch, catch and most any infield position. She has 2 pitches and was clocked in the high 40's and mid 30's for the change(during practice). I think she can be a good #2 or a great #3. She has a good arm and can get the ball to 2nd without much of an arc! She blocks the ball well but if you have a deep back stop ...... Again a good #2 or great #3. She is not afraid of the ball and loves 3rd, again with an arm that will get it there 90% of the time. Some what slow on the bunt but the arm is there. She batted over 400 last season for a travel team. What is the best way to promote her at tryouts? Should she try all 3 or just the infield?

Thanks in advance!!!

Very good question ! Some people are better at promoting then others! As a rule for me, the more the parent says how good there DD is, the less I listen! How many times have I heard "she has a gun for an arm". I just want to know if it is loaded and she can pull the trigger!

A guy much smarter then me, well he is not actually smarter then me but he said a smart thing one time lol....Never ever give up a skill. So when you go to tryouts, tryout for everything.

* one exception to the rule IMO is this: Pitching---If she is trying out for a team loaded with pitching and she tries out as a pitcher and they dont need her, they may bypass her even if she is good enough in other areas. One sure fire way to create drama is to pick up a pitcher and not pitch her. So keep that in mind when looking at teams, decide before you go to tryouts if Pitching is something she really wants to do or if its something she does because she can. If any of that makes any sense lol....Good Luck :D

To get the attention of the coach, write in (Utility player/ Pitcher Catcher) that will boost the coaches interested faster than anything. Having a Utility player who can adjust to all positions is a plus to any roster. Any player who pitches and catches well in the game of fastpitch softball will find a home very quickly. Her skills will shine and the coach will see her doing what she does best.

just go tryout. Let her actions speak for herself...

Les... so true! Show up and audition. I don't care if you put down a position in which I am set. If you beat her out, you will be offered a spot. It is not a rocket science. Go for the gold in every tryout you attend. I know as a coach I appreciate effort beyond and above. Go for it!

Tell her to put it all on the line every time. Put down can play anywhere and let her coach decide what will best fit the team. If she is 12u give us a look Aug. 29th in Beavercreek at Rotary Park.

Good post Jim and Paul. When my dd subs for a team . " Anywhere you want me coach". Somewhat like Len's post. She has subbed for some pretty good coaches. Two named above. Bring a positive attitude and have fun. It feeds others on the team and tryouts can still be fun.

Be up front with the coaches during tryouts. Let her try out for all the positions....that is what tryouts are for. The coaches will decide where she can best fit :)

What are the goals for the child? Obviously your not staying with the team from this past season, so what do you want from your new team? Elite? Find out the organizations goals and see if they meet the family goals, then proceed with giving it your all at any tryout you attend. Dont give up on Pitching, until it's recommended!! Remember though, it's tough to be both a catcher and a pitcher... Good Luck!!!
