First I would like to congratulate the Ohio Hawks Gold on the 3-0 pool play giving them 1st place. TD decided to call tournament and give winners after pool play but had the teams play 1st round of bracket play. Instead of awarding teams after 1st round of bracket play he awarded teams after pool play. Above posts are correct about the horrible field conditions and NO field dry. I saw 1 rake come out and rake the pitching area, rake off some mud and put it in a bucket and then rake less wet mud into the hole for the pitchers. The 10U bracket allowed 4 outfileders?! I haven't seen that since rec league but was allowed in a travel tourney? All in all I am proud of my girls and how they played with a 3-1 finish and scoring 44 runs in 4 games with wins over Licking county Stars, Xtreme Heat, and Vicking Elite and our 1 loss in pool play to Ohio Hawks Gold. I chalk it up to getting in some games and experience. I will have to say my team will pass on any future Urbana tournaments. I know tourneys deal with weather but there were definetly better solutions for this tourney.

Thanks PM74, after taking 1st place I can asure you - we will never play this tournament again. I've never seen anything like it. Sunday Morning right now - sun is shining ???? ;&

I agree with Jerry and Dan. We took our lumps to some great teams in pool play, but won our bracket game convincingly then the tournament was cancelled and the team we beat in first round of bracket play got the 2nd place trophy. Today the sun is shining. There is no reason the fields coundn't have been worked and the tourney resumed on a delay. We won't be back either.

Congratulations Hawks. After playing you yesterday and in friendlies you're a class org.

Just got home. Stayed in Springfield area last night with my dd and two of her teammates. The girls weren't happy to wake up to the bright sun streaming in the window. We left at noon and the weather was partly cloudy and nice. This tournament could have easily been decided on the field this morning.

You try to get these girls to work hard and never quit. It would be nice if the TD would do the same. I hate to say it, but calling the tourney at 4:00 on Saturday because of what you think the weather is going to do gives the appearance of a money grab. I don't want my dd going back to any tourneys Urbana and if you are serious about softball I would recommend you stay away. If anything they should just run rec tourneys there.

I had offer to come up and help Jon due to his Heath problem with running the Tournament. But after talking with Jon this past week he said the he was feeling ok and didn't need use to come up and help out, but we were planing on coming up Sunday and help out in any way we could. Just to bad the weather played a major factor of the out come of another tournament.

I think it was in 2003 that almost no tournament were completed due to weather until after the month of June. Even in June and July and August we didn't have great weather. But 2003 was the worst year for getting tournaments in due to weather that I remember.

Very disappointed in the way the tourny was ran and the fields were taken care of. And even more disappointed for the girl who had to play all day in the rain and didn't even get the chance to settle things on the field. But from the looks of things Starz,Dragons,Hawks and Heat will all be seeing each other down the road for what I'm sure will be some great softball. 1st and last time I hope to go to Urbana, hope some diamond dry is purchased with our half of the entry fee!

I wish he would have asked for your help - for the sake of the reputation of Urbana softball. Weather was not the major factor, TD being unprepared was the major factor. I have seen tournaments played out many times in much - MUCH worse weather. See pick of Day 2....

The bright spot for me was that I didn't have to miss my 8YO play two games in Lancaster today as per our original family plan. Yea, they got plenty of rain too, but some motivated people did the work necessary to get the fields ready. Go figure....;&

I can tell you we have play in the rain, almost rain, looking like rain more rain coming. But it is what it is. Push ahead get as many game in as you can and by all mean try to settle it on the diamonds. We face rain all week-end last year in the Jamboree, We used over 300 bags of no dry and 3 tons of sand. We did are best under the worst of conditions, and some how we pulled it off and settle it on the diamonds.

But it took me over 8 years to learn what and what not to do when hosting events, when it come to rain. Now talking about NO DRY, are diamonds the recover faster then any other diamonds are the ones we dump the sand on.

Slow down the diamonds, but at least you can get the games in. And they seem to hold up better if more rain come.

The Big plus about sand you can grade it back off the diamonds on Monday morning back down to the dirt. And you don't end up with a dust bowl diamond after its all done.

Like I said it taken me almost 8 years to learn what and what not to do for recover diamonds.

As it turn out I wouldn't have been able to come up and help until Sunday any way due to my Son and Daughter and 3 grand kids being in a accident Thursday night on the Ohio Turnpike.

Thanks God they all was wearing seat belts, well anyway Hope the best to all.

God Bless

I forgot to mention, under my Alias, that everyone who purchased hotel rooms were out a bunch of money. They could have driven home and saved at least $100 or more. With all due respect Ricky, I don't think you could have saved this mess of a tourney. There was NO urgency from the TD at ALL! The coaches did almost all of the work on the fields to get them ready.

I don't really know why this would surprise anyone. TD completely screwed up his fall uniform tournament. When people posted their displeasure we were told how were wrong and how great TD was. The truth I hear will soon be out.

It will never happen, but if the TD had any self respect he would be sending checks to the 10U teams on Monday morning for half of their entry fee.

I do have to say it was nice to meet Mad Hornet at the tourney. Nice to put a face with the name. His Xtreme Heat is a very nice team that does not give up and plays hard and plays the right way.

HEADS UP TO ALL:

I was at fields at 06:00am on Saturday and spoke to TD around 7:30am. His mind was made up about Sunday play at that vary moment in which I told him there's huge gaps of clearing in these storms, and possible that No Rain could occur also. We realized much of the scenario I advised of. Some rain saturday and from what I hear NO RAIN SUNDAY.

THE WEATHER HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH NOT PLAYING ON SUNDAY. I'M EXTREMLEY INTERESTED IN KNOWING WHY HE WAS NOT WILLING TO PLAY SUNDAY. QUOTE, "Well, the 12us will be done today, and with all the bad weather PREDICTED, I don't think we will get 10u in tomorrow.

SORRY, this guy (Sick or not, had his mind made up at 07:00am on Saturday.)

Teams Paid for 5 GG, So how much money is in his pocket that NEEDS to be returned.
- Didn't have to pay umps for several games scheduled for Saturday,
- Didn't pay umps for ALL Games scheduled Sunday.

HOW MUCH MONEY IS THAT and WHO's GETTING THEIRS BACK????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Ohhhhh and by the way.
* No Diamond Dry was purchased because TD stated it was 80 and Sunny last year. *ARE YOU KIDDING ME. Forecast for over a week showed RAIN..
* Also, it was parents from teams that were collecting DRY DIRT from dirt mounds around the fields to place infront of pitchers mounds, so ptichers could have some safe footing.

TD NEEDS TO GET OUT HERE OR EMAIL ALL ORGS AND EXPLAIN WHERE THE MONEY WENT.

And Ricky, as for your offered help, TD said you couldn't make it due to some family issues, as I was looking for you as I knew you and others had offered to help. SOUNDS FUNNY and FISHY... I NEED HELP,,,, NO NO NO I'm fine... Of Course, he didn't want any witnesses to the CRIME. LOL!

As I told everyone Saturday , the rain came Saturday evening and night. the fields were beyond repair. If this were June or July with 90+ degree weather we would have had a better chance of Playing on Sunday. No amount of field dry would have helped . Sorry that a few of you had such a terrible time with this tournament.

I cannot control mother nature. All teams with the exception of the Hawks got 4 out of 5 games in. to me that is a good thing. I stand behind my decision to cancel this tournament on Saturday afternoon.

And I do want to thank all of the coaches who jumped in and helped with the fields. Doing things like that just shows the character of them.

I would love to HEAR FROM ANYONE that was pleased in anyway about your tournament this weekend. Think you aren't realizing what a TD is accountable for and the great expectations Orgs, Players, Families have of a TD and their tournies when so much is given up (*Money Time, Other Opportunities).

Frankly, Every Friendly I've attended was run better and gave more then this expensive Tournament. ANOTHER reason we all NEED to play more Friendlies.

If you read up in my post you would see why we couldn't be there.. But was coming up on Sunday to help if needed. Just to make sure you understand Jon didn't ask for any help, when he was first going to cancel this tournament due to health problems.

I offer to help Jon because Jon my Friend.. Plan and simply !

Ricky,

I hear you and applaud you and the many others that tried to help this weekend. To be FRANK again, Jon should have cancelled the event, as it was not worth the $400 to be honest and unfortunately, it has dozens of coaches , parents, and players questioning his intergity if not his thought process, which is the last thing Jon needs when not feeling well.

From a helath perspective, I KNOW everyone wishes him well and is routing for him.. From a TD perspective, I think most everyone hopes he refrains from hosting tournies again.

Don't say that. It just makes things worse. Some of us were out there looking Sunday morning (we had hotel rooms). Earlier in this thread someone from the Hawks posted pictures of the field from Sunday morning. They look better than they did all day Saturday! We are not morons. Only you can tell us exactly when the decision not to play Sunday was made, but I suspect it was well before we rolled into town on Saturday morning. Try to squeeze in as many games as possible Saturday.....then forget about it because you can walk with the money. The only problem was the weather was way better than expected overnight Saturday and Sunday morning. All you had to do to avoid this fiasco was wait until Sunday morning to call it and none of this would have happened..........because we would have easily played.
