USSSA Tournament USSSA Nationals (lets be honest)

Which Nationals your team attends is usually the culmination of your season's success - or lack thereof. The goals of the players on your team usually have a bearing on the tournaments chosen during the season. It always seems that teams heavy in college caliber players are attending the tournaments frequented by college coaches. The college coaches are there because the players are there. The big question is "In what tournaments did the top 10 Ohio teams play that was most successful in showcasing their players to college coaches?" On the other hand, if the majority of your team has no plans to play in college, does it really matter?

Three questions:

1. There's a Columbus in Indiana?

2. What's wrong with pink?

3. Should they ALL get trophies?

It seems unanimous, if you want to play the best of the best or you want the college exposure you play ASA. I've been hearing that for years. USSSA is in Disney for a reason. I'm sure they get some good teams but it is what it is, isn't it? As long as they are having fun down there, great. My preference is always ASA as I think they have the better umpires and I hate when the umpires are "part of the game".

Several years ago, we played in the 12U USSSA nationals in Canton, Mi. One of the participants also went to the ASA 12U-A nationals and won the tournament. Another team also went to ASA and finished in the top 5. I would say that the USSSA tournament field was pretty talented.

The best teams dont always go to ASA nationals. Especially this year due to financials. Several top teams that qualified for South Dakota, turned down their bid. So it was eventually passed, and passed, and passed down, until finally a team that could afford to go took the bid

But over all - ASA is the only organization at 16 and 18's for about 20 teams in the state. The rest of the teams have the opportunity to find success at other sanctioned tournaments. Winning is fun. At the end of the day, when the girls move out of the house and pack those trophies, they wont remember who sanctioned the dang thing.

Not unusual for teams, especially the younger age groups, to use another Nationals to tune up for ASA since historically they're on different weeks. Over the years I recall seeing several of the east coast teams show up at PONY Nationals (Shamrocks among others) and then a week later at ASA; same for USSSA (think BatBusters, et al) when 16s were in Kansas City (lot of SW and Midwest teams); didn't see as many NSA doing both, but there were some.

Makes sense if you think about it, you want to play good competition to gear up for ASA Nationals so where else would you look find some of the strongest teams at the end of July?

Sing with me now..."Why can't we be friends?...Why can't we be friends?...Why can't we be friends?..."
Come on now, isn't the sport really about our dd's playing softball and learning new things, regardless of the location or whether the national has "better" teams.

Scott,

There is a niche for every team. Some are going to be different.

Just like there is a niche for every person or family.. Some people love the city and some can't stand city life. To each their own.

So, different sanctions cater to different niches of softball. Those niches change from year to year, depending upon an honest assessment of the team's capabilities and desires.

So im going out on a limb here but let me ask a question.......

Is it safe to say that teams who fare well in ASA tournaments get more responses on their tryout postings than USSSA teams ?

THANK YOU! I would rather my daughter play on a team where she had fun, learned and got to play than to have her on some team that was "elite" and had coaches and other parents downing other teams and players. I learn a lot on this board - a lot about who and which organizations to avoid.

Johnnies,
We were at Canton MI as 12u as well. Who was your dd with then? We lost to the California Crusiers 2-1. Yes Scott, there were some well respected west coast teams there. I love those old Ohio Hustle memories....Don

Another great point if the USSSA Nationals were in Cleveland Tenn. I gaurantee its not as big a draw as Disney. Listen the USSSA and NSA bids are a dime a dozen and clearly none of you who choose to tell me I'm ignorant and keep coming with the "consider the source commentscan seriously tell me USSSA & NSA can even compare to the talent swarming around the teams that earned the right to play ASA/USA A Nationals.

Now on the other hand if it was a team decision to play nationals and go to Disney World and a type of vacation I completely understand your teams motivation, but 7 out of 10 of you teams would jump at the chance to play ASA if your team was strong enough to earn the bid.

In light of the comments made about USSSA, I want to congratulate Philo's High Voltage 14U team. They received the #1 seed at national's. This team is talanted no doubt, but win or lose they will come home to a very small town that is extremely proud of them.
Yes, I know this is my first post, and no I do not have a daughter on the team. I am from the area and have watched these girls grow up. I for one am very proud of them and I hope they bring home the title.

That is what this is all about. Congrats go out to your team and your community.

Have been to all 3 (NSA, USSSA and ASA) nationals with daughter's teams over the last 6 years. Placed top 25(ish) at NSA and 13th at ASA (same year), and 1st at USSSA the following year.

There's no doubt, imo, that the top 8-12teams at ASA nationals are the best teams in the country. However, my experience has been that there are at least a handful of teams at the USSSAs and NSAs that can compete with the best non-Cali teams at ASAs. Those top 4-5 California teams are normally in a class by themselves.

Even ASAs can get "watered down" a bit with teams qualifying out of the Metro Associations.

I don't have a dd that plays on the team. My youngest dd is 28 yrs old. I just coach the team - so in essence each of the players are my "dd". ;)

Hey Johnnies are you going to get to coach any grand babies? I think that would be really cool to get to coach my grand kids.

Hey Scott

Out of curiosity, who does your dd play for and how is their team doing at nationals? I know your dd is out of town playing ball while you are home......
