Hey Scott

Out of curiosity, who does your dd play for and how is their team doing at nationals? I know your dd is out of town playing ball while you are home......

Len

Laser Orange 16U ASA/USA Nationals, they were 1-1 in pool play. Beat Kansas Fury 6-1.
Lost to American Pastime(calif.) 4-3 in 10 innings. Little dice hit a double to tie the game and send it into extra innings (not bad for a 14 yr old lol).
Today they beat Espirt (st.Louis Mo) in the first game of bracket play.

Just out of couriousity where would the teams that win this tournament finish in the ASA Nationals in their respective age group!;&

Just out of curiousity where do teams who dont earn their way into ASA A Nationals but are handed a bid usually finish and shouldnt they maybe stick to USSSA Nationals or maybe NSA Nationals??

Thanks Uber. It looks like they're doing very well. I knew she was at the nationals, I just couldn't remember which team she was on.

Have been to all 3 (NSA, USSSA and ASA) nationals with daughter's teams over the last 6 years. Placed top 25(ish) at NSA and 13th at ASA (same year), and 1st at USSSA the following year.

There's no doubt, imo, that the top 8-12teams at ASA nationals are the best teams in the country. However, my experience has been that there are at least a handful of teams at the USSSAs and NSAs that can compete with the best non-Cali teams at ASAs. Those top 4-5 California teams are normally in a class by themselves.

Even ASAs can get "watered down" a bit with teams qualifying out of the Metro Associations.

.... what he said!

Having been to USA/ASA, ASA Eastern Nationals, NSA Nationals, and Pony Nationals .... every one of these tournaments had VERY strong teams in them, and some VERY weak teams also.

Would totally agree though that a bid to USA/ASA says something all by itself, and to finish with a winning record let alone even near the Top 10 at USA/ASA is a huge accomplishment. Those top 5-6 Cali teams are monsters.

Still ... mowing your way through any of these tournaments is respectable and commendable, ... some tough teams that make their choices based on things other than just the bright lights of USA/ASA (Broadway). Some like off-Broadway ...

No team in particular. But there are teams every year at ASA Nationals who are GIVEN a bid, go out there, go 0-2 in Championship play and go home tied for 97th.

If someone is going to say you should be embarrassed to admit you are going to USSSA Nationals shouldnt they also admit that there are plenty of teams that go ASA Nationals just to say we went ASA only to be embarrassed.

As others have said, ASA definitely has the top 10 teams in the country there, but after that the TOP TEAMS at other nationals would compete just fine, and even give those top ten a game.

I just didnt see a point to rip on YOUTH teams who choose a Nationals other than ASA. Maybe their team goals are different - that is no reason to be ashamed.

After spending money for the 16 Easterns and be treated the way the teams are here on quality of field work, ASA rules, draws and meaningless games, I think orlando would be a great place to be as I am sure there are no hookers at the host hotels as the Rhode Island team stated to us last night. They actually moved to a hotel 30 miles away after the coach got propositioned... Seeing the live video playing is great as well for relatives who have never seen their nieces, grandaughter or friends play. At the end of the day, it's about playing a quality game in a quality fashion.

Is ASA usually the top dog, sure, but to drive this far and spend this much, they definately Hoover Vacuumed this one....

Maybe I am wrong, but I thought that all ASA berths had to be earned. Winner of tourney gets an "A" berth and 2nd gets a "B" berth. Is this completely false? Does ASA hand out berths like NSA?

There have been a few teams in the past that have been able to get an at large bid :D

Ok, so generally, how many a year are we talking about? A couple? ASA is still the top of the echelon in regards to Nationals. I don't know anything at all about utrip, but I see it's played much more down in southern Ohio than in NEO.

I'm just sayin that because we don't see many utrip tourneys up here in NEO, I don't really know anything about them.

Definitly a cheap shot that was uncalled for, but consider the source.

This past weekend I was able to view a USSSA tournament in the lovely city of Eastlake! I have to tell you that this tournament was similar to a rec-ball tournament, and just cant believe that any softball association would sanction a tournament of this caliber.....But it looks like the the USSSA was all over this one. If this is the type of competition that plays at a USSSA tournament my previous thought was correct!

On a second note what does it take for a governing softball association to allow sanctioning of a tournament? are there any qualifications a tournament has to have before one of these associations slap their name on it?;&
