Just sore or injured, was there a third option? I know you have to play through the pain but the GAME isnt that important. But prob. the one who wanted it more.

I play the catcher with the sore knee. Long a believer that once you start icing you're shutting a muscle down. She may have chosen not to ice for that reason. Tough decision, no doubt.

Did the coaches know catcher had a sore knee?

Either way it didn't matter, you can play around the catcher with the sore arm. Catchers uses the knees more. I would have done same thing and played catcher with sore arm. However, I would have comunicated to the catcher with sore knee why.

TOO vague to correctly answer, many more variables at play here...

Quits the team over a fall ball game? Sounds like the team is better off looking for a player now than looking for one in the middle of the summer, because the quitting part was probably bound to happen sometime. Now, if this was a high-powered showcase, I could understand a bit more why emotions ran this high, but if it was a non-showcase fall ball game, I don't understand quitting at all. Try first to communicate the frustrations to the coach and get things square for similar events in the future.

Heat, where did you see fall ball? I agree that more info. is probably needed to determine appropriateness...was there no communication about what was going on?

Coach should have talked to both players. Were they splitting time. Not sure why she would quit unless it was her turn to catch. Again communication was probably needed. To me the girl icing would probably be hurt more or just better at taking care of a injury. Unless you ask the players you'll probably not know. I would of played the player who's turn it was if they were splitting time. Not enough info to make a good decision.

It was in travel season not fall ball...but at 16u do u think a player should know if they are ready to play or if the pain is just to bad.do u think it is the player responsibility to let a coach know how she/he is felling. with all the stuff that a coach has to do to get ready for the next game do u think a coach needs to ask a player if she can play. and yes coach knew both player were felling a little pain ...and the player with a sore knee has went down durning a warn up run..my thing is if she was ready to play why didnt she tell her coach she was good to go...why get madd and quit if your the one that said u were in pain to start with.

joed:

You are right per the above post. I just assumed that it was a very recent game. And you know how "assume" breaks down :)

Some players will play with minor injuries and some will make excuses to not play. Coaches usually find this out in the summer tournament schedule. I know the girls I've coached always wanted to play so to answer your question no it's not up to the player to tell the coach she wants to play. The coach should assume she wants to play. Communication with a injured player would always help in my opinion.

Injuries notwithstanding, you obviously made the right choice, since the other one was more worried about herself than the team.

Not many teams will be comfortable carrying just one catcher. Any 16 year old should know that by now.

Just wanted to add I agree with Scooter. I would never condone quiting.

Yeah, but did she ever say she couldn't play? Did the coach even ask them both? many kids are sore and just play without being asked or assumed? I think there's more to the story here ...?

Mine played catcher one school season through pain recovering from 3 weeks off a broken foot and then the next season a broken thumb, sore yeah, but she played and wanted in all of those games she was in without being asked by the coach. Sounds more like a playing time scenario to blow up and quit... But communication is a two way street...

Would love to hear the other side

So if your dd is injured and has been seen by a health professional, do you require them to bring a doctor's note.

Yep, always... Mine babysit one of the best in Ohio which helps... He even set her hand in the throwing position to be able to get back faster.... he even looks at their xrays at home on his pc when needed..

I would have talked to the parents.

"They say they are hurt. Do you girls want to play? Parents, are you OK with that?"

My DD is a catcher and she will play through just about anything. Sore arm, legs, knees, bruises, scrapes, gravel in the shoes,...

In one really hot game, between innings, she ran over to a garbage can and puked, but she was going back in to play. (We stopped her - dehydrated.)

She's 16U this past summer and I had to tell the coach to pull her one day because she was sick (not bad - enough to affect her) and would not tell the coach. Coached pulled her right away - kid didn't like it but understood.

Which one to play? Not enough information to really tell...

At 16-u they are old enough to know the diffrence between hurt and injured. Yes it is the coaches job to know/ask if she was well enough to play. They are still kids and sometimes need to be told to sit. That is where the coaching comes into play. The coach should know how tough a kid is and what is going on with her. All this assuming the coach knew she had a sore knee. But to quit over not playing in 1 game is unnecessary. That tells me there was some major comunication problems. All tho the team is now down a quiter so I guess it all worked for the better.
