Why is NWO Softball the best?

I kind of agree with Dragbunt and here is my take on this. The one thing I think could solve alot of our issues with this is having "A" and "B" brackets in every big tourney. Of course, some coaches want their kids to get the expierence of playing against the better teams, but that is where TD's could step in, if a team isnt good enough to be in the "A".

I am all for kids getting a chance to get better by playing, ?Do you really think at the 14,16 and 18U levels they want to be beating some thrown together travel team by 20 runs in the middle of a 4 game saturday? Its painfully boring for everybody involved.

Kids get better by playing and having success, they wont get better being dominated and over-matched.

In Hockey there are all kinds of different level of travel teams and tourneys, there are AAA, AA, A, and All-stars. There is some cross-overs in tourneys, but most teams try and play at the level they are, softball could easily do the samething. A ASA Tourney could be "AA" and "AAA" only bracket and have a "A" and All-stars in another bracket.

Just my thoughts,I do think, just like drag bunt said all the kids should get a chance to play. I think its wonderful that any kid in NWO that wants to play can play.

Softball is a great sport and like UB said we should be trying to grow the sport, I just dont think a team is going to stay together or have any fun if they go an entire season with just 2 or 3 wins.

I like your idea Uber. Never thought of that. I guess that is why they have National's A and National's B. ASA Easterns ect...

643dp... I was just quoting an artical I read just 2 years ago about why girls quit sports. It was in a magazine by NFCA.

uber.... I agree with the "A" and "B" Tourney I would be glad to go in the "B" bracket if it was warranted ....(Heck I would go in a "C" bracket if meant not to get crushed sometimes...lol)
As long as we could still be a part of the tourney`s and atmoshere we want even though we may not be as good as another team..... :)

Another reason NWO softball is great is it is Saturday nite at 7:00pm and you have Coaches, Parents and TD`S talking fastpitch...how cool.... :) :)

643dp, the Hockey rating works because of this. You enter a "A" tourney and do well and improve, you get points which lead to recieving a "AA" rating. As you improve the level of your competition will improve. A team must keep "X" Number of kids off of the previous years team to keep their rating. Its doable I think lol, well wait probably not, since there are 5 governing bodies of softball lol, Hockey has 1. We should just all go ASA ;D

I guess my point and I will use a team not from around here as my example, but a brand new 14U with 8 players with no travel ball expierence and 4 with a few years does not want to run into a team like the Slammers. That would not happen if there were a rating system :)

I think we can all agree there just isnt anything better then the atmosphere at a big tourney. Especially early in the tourney when everybody is excited about their teams chances.

being involved in summer ball for a long time, my thinking is ever evolving on this topic [though most in our program question if I can really "think" at all!] First Playing is good, no doubt. A and B brackets like Uber says should be really implemented with TD's placing teams in question. My real concern with summer ball is burnout, overkill and continuity of skill instruction. As former director of Magic last year, I saw all the way down to now even the 12u leve, players not taking instruction from coaches because as one parent put it "that's not the type of hitting we do at our high school" which is valid somewhat I guess. At my former coaching position I had 8 kids one year playing high level travel ball with 3 different organizations, all teaching something contrary to what we were teaching. One kid told me "coach I play 56 games for them, and they are going to get me a scholarship" which she never did get BTW, and my reply was you played 56 games hitting the wrong way, and further developed a bad habit. I know there are some excellent summer coaches, very dedicated and love the game, and I give them credit, I couldn't do it. We are trying to implement a summer program that teaches the same system to kids from 9 to 17, who primarily will hopefully end up in our high school program [we also take a select amount of players from other areas] we are limiting our tournaments to about 4 or 5 to givekids the ability to do other things and play other sports. We are looking to place a select no. of our kids in additional tournaments with other programs that may need fill-in's. We know our system isn't perfect, but we think it's a GREAT value [less than 200.00 per kid with full uniforms, bags etc.] and hopefully with expose them to travel competition with a lesser commitment.

That sounds great Maumee, Coach Barber did something similar at SUA years back on a smaller scale and actually more expensive lol, but I know it must have worked for her. She was forced to do it I believe due the large number of CYO kids that attend SUA and basically havent played a real game of fastpitch yet.

Whenever I read peoples thoughts about hitting I think of a buddy of mine who coached an Elite travel Baseball team, off of that team 4-5 kids got drafted, one was a first rounder, Most played on the end of the season #1 Ranked USA Today High school baseball team in the country. His theory on hitting was this, this is what he would tell his parents before they signed to play with him...Your kid can go up there with piano bench leg and as long as they hit I will leave them alone, if they arent hitting, I dont care who their hitting coach is or how much you paid to go to a camp its...My problem then and I will take care of it my way. lol, he was and still is a its my way or the highway kind of guy but I get a chuckle out of it.

The problem for the girls is knowing who to trust. There is some really bad information being coached. I realize that is solely my opinion, but I know I don't want some "wannabe" undoing all of my DD's hard work.

that's a tough one Bubba, as there is more than "one way to skin a cat" I don't want to bad rap other coaches philosphies, I just know what works for me. Different philosophies and techniques is what makes things interesting. Uber, I agree with your comments about the coach changing, we use the "I don't care if you stand on your head and hit if it works we'll leave it alone" but in reality, it never does work. Don Mattingly, my all time favorite MLB player used to hit an incredible 500 balls a day off a tee. Hitters just don't work at hitting enough IMO. Most of our kids rarely do anything after they leave us for the day.

Maumee, if a girl has spent 2 years transitioning to RVP (which I believe you don't subscribe to, correct me if I am wrong), why would she want to undo all of her work for a coach who doesn't like the style?

I don't typically provide hitting instruction to a girl who already has an outside hitting coach. If she is not hitting the ball, I move her down or out of the line-up. I may, however, communicate with her hitting coach or parent, if I see something that is fundamentally wrong.

Bubba, ?that's part of my point, I have respect for organizational travel coaches, because it really is difficult to "teach" kids with different philosophies. We actually taught RVP before it was called that, in baseball during the 90's. We called it "triggers" and I felt in baseball, where the windup is much larger and slower, and the mound was further back, AND the field of play is MUCH larger, it was a viable hitting option. My experience, and this is just my opinion, we had too many kids getting stuck in the Negative with RVP, and there was more to "go wrong". Maybe it was simply we weren't good enough coaches to over come it, but we believe in rotational hitting, straight to the ball. RVP certainly should produce more Power at times though. Again, this is what has worked for us, and there is more than one way to skin a cat. the RVP vs. rotational, vs. what I call a "hybrid of both" is like politics or religion, it's just belief. Thus the reason we expanded the Thunder program, why not have MOST of our kids being taught the same thing. ?One of my former [and favorite players!] I once overheard telling the team "coach isn't conceited, he's just convinced"! ?

Bubba, very well stated. There are many highly sucessful travel ball coaches out there, and they all contribute as to what works best for them. They can't be an expert in all styles whether it would be hitting, pitching, ect. Sometimes, the best intentions, a adjustment here or there, with a style they don't necessesarly believe in, can be disastrous. Perhaps athletes/parents should do more homework about a coach and their styles, (and vise-versa) before joining a travel team. That could help eliminate many headaches for all people involved.

These problems aren't just at the travel ball level, my DD,who is a H.S senior, attended a offensive skills clinic at a Div II Univ. She has 5 years of RVP instruction under her belt. She's been highly sucessful with this style. The college coach didn't like it however and wanted her to change to their style on the spot. I might add that this univ. had less than ten wins last year.....hmmm. DD left very dissappointed, since the education she would've recieved was top notch.

great stuff here.. I am a 16u coach and help at a local HS.. Who am I to try to change a ladies swing or mechanics if they see a specialty coach(that they pay for..lol) I have girls on my teams that see ?Leon Woods, Doug Gillis, Dyane Laynum(sp) and Ect. What I try to do is go to the clinics that these coaches put on and learn as much of the language as they are using and learn what they are teaching so I can help teach their philosophy and help the girls that way....

It's great to be talking softball at this time of the year. I've been reading this forum for years, as well as others, and just felt like it was time to post.

I believe NWO softball organizations provide opportunities for girls with different talents to develop their skill and love for the game. I agree there is nothing like big tournament atmosphere. NWO venues and TD's provide the opportunity for girls to challenge themselves and put themselves out there...good or bad. Play has improved every year. The Irish, Magic, Wizards,Thunder, Sharks, Blues, etc. have been put together for the girls, and for them to get better.

It is true that some of the local teams only play in the local tournaments, but it is hard to beat the venues!! I have seen JoeA and other famous posters frequent NWO at least once a year :)

I also believe NWO High school coaches respect and cooperate with the travel organizations that ulitmately feed their programs. I often read posts that will contradict this, but is MHO that it is true.

Time to watch the Wings battle out of their slump. Looking forward to better weather and outdoor practices.
