Would you help get a field ready to play if needed

With all of the rains we have been having each week, would you ever be inclined to help a TD get fields ready even if it wasn't your tournament? Remember we all do this for the girls to play... What about if you had help, but they weren't sure if they were doing it right? does that matter to you?

Uncle Stans - Cleveland - June 27-29, 2008

Many of our parents and coaches were ready to jump in and help get the fields ready for the championship games on Sunday after the rains came, but we were told by the TD that we were not permitted due to the union. :-/

Everyone wants to see the kids play, and I believe will do what they can to help - even if that means staying out of the way for those more experienced to do what is necessary. ;)

Most all of the parents that I have ran into with fastpitch would jump at the chance to help get the fields ready. I have even done it with school ball. But, as mentioned above, some facilities do not allow it due to union or whatever rules. :'( >:(

after setting around all day on a sunny friday (games were cancelled) last week , I guarntee there were 2 guys who would have jumped in and done anything possable to play ball. I'd do it everytime , and it loks like those going to NSA states may get the chance this weekend . bring your mud boots . MD

just for giggles, what exactly WOULD happen if a group of parents/coaches grabbed rakes and went at it?....I'm always being a devil!

although my hispanic ancestric ability to garden somehow broke from my DNA, I CAN rake a field....now lining one is another matter...maybe it's the constant stream of Corona running through my veins...

Getting games in is a priority. We would and have helped get fields ready to play. However, let's not begrudge someone trying to support his/ her family. If working with city/union officials is a problem, have the tournament somewhere else - or not @ all. Not saying unions are right or wrong. But, who cuts the grass/ etc. before we get to the fields. I think we're all just frustrated because mother nature has been dumping on us this year. It makes it very tough when she does. JMHO.

I agree, if there are certain rules, then we have to live with those. On those fields that anyone can is what I was asking the question for. Now as for me, I know about as much on field maintenance as I do cooking....

Not much .... But just tell me what you want and where you want it and "Do Work Son"....

vst,

not having the tourney to avoid city crews is just quitting....that does no one any good, now our DD's don't even get a chance to play ball....try having NSA tourneys at Berliner somewhere else? where? maybe pickerington central/north...certaintly nowhere in Columbus, except maybe the OSU fields, and vanalmsick wouldn't let us near them with a 10 foot pole....

westerville has many fields, but they run a city crew, as those teams found out this year as well....

in Delaware? not sure who works their fields.....

are you going to tell ricky, who also is responsible for giving us this ofc, to not have the jamboree because of the city crew? yeah right!

;DThere are no unions at GAPSS, grab a rake and have at it... ?;D

Joking aside, the fields are in great shape. Flanagan and his crew have been working on them all week. If we get bad weather and they become unplayable we get them fixed up or move to another venue.

2007 TRACK season, coach has the track athletes go around the track and pick up the trash from the winter, custodian/grounds worker comes out and tells coach that is a union job and they can not be cleaning up track after a heated arguement athletes stopped cleaning up...a week later the union rep shows up to complain with the track coach present, track coach explained to the rep that the trash they were cleaning up was from football season and the trash barrels still were not cleaned out either. He took the rep for a walk around the stadium and rep told school official if they ever wasted his time again, it would be the last.

Fast forward 2008 SOFTBALL...a parent (union worker for car manufacurer) is very involved is prepping the fields and keeping up with the trash, usually does it during the day as he is a third shifter and usually misses the games. He decided one day that the grass needed to be cut, because it lookes like a wheat field, as he is riding on his mower a different custodian comes up to him and says "you know that is a union job and you can get in trouble for it"...parents reply "do you really want to call your union rep out here again? this grass has not been cut since July last summer and the softball season started 2 weeks ago, you have not been doing your job!" Custodian walked away and we never heard from the union rep. ;D

I have in the past helped, and more then likely would in the future. Of course I also think that if an organization or a TD decides to put on an event and invite teams to participate then they better have a plan for if and when it rains. Seriously it seems that many this season are simply amazed that it decided to rain during their scheduled event. Then they expect people to either help get diamonds ready or in one case last weekend just expect the 12U coaches to kind of run their own event. If this TD's take money from teams in exchange for putting on a decent tournament then at least be ready for all circumstances. The excuse that it rained and you could not control it is meaningless when the sun comes out and there is nobody there to get things in shape to play. The paying participants should not be considered as part of your action plan. They should be additional help if they decide to offer it.

We have an assistant coach who actually will go and find equipment so that he can work on the fields. Any tournament we have been in where there was rain, he was working the fields. It is back breaking work and without this guy's contributions at Diamond Dogs, Chain Reaction, and last week at Uncle Stans to just name a few, games may not have gone off. He single handedly almost got that field ready last week at Uncle Stans.

Tim-your efforts are greatly appreciated by all and certainly not expected. Thanks for your work!!

I think every parent should bring a sponge to the game, If it rains and the field needs to be dried you could send 25 or so parents out with their sponges to soak up the water. Dry in no time! ;D

I like many parents/coaches would be willing to help. However, I've heard that insurance can be a concern. What if a volunteer is injured or has a heart attack while taking care of the field? Does this leave the owners of the field open to lawsuits? Is it any different from when a player is injured?
