Help with a rule please...

Sometimes the mind just goes blank and my rule book is not around. Runner on first, one out. Batter with a 2-2 count. Runner on a straight steal, batter swings and foul tips it straight back to the catcher's mitt but it is dropped. What should be the call at the plate and what should happen to the runner who is now standing on second base (there was no throw)?

Foul ball (DEAD BALL), but if the catcher had held the ball a foul tip (LIVE BALL) allowing the runner to advance with jeopardy. ?Runner back to one.

The ruling by the plate umpire was that a foul tip that is dropped by the catcher is a dropped third strike. Runner on first that was stealing second had to return to first. Our coaches all looked at each other and said that the call had to be wrong but no one argued much. Young umpire at the plate that was struggling so much withthe strike zone that we thought it best to not put up too much of a fuss.

No protest :) As I said, the young ump at the plate was struggling so much with the strikezone (for both teams) that we just shook it off. It helped that it was late in the game and we had a 7 run lead at the time.

Just to give you an example of the plate ump's problems...he calls a third strike on our hitter that clearly crossed well above her chest. Our head coach walked down to him and asked how that location could be a strike and he said that he was calling the "legal" strikezone...shoulders to knees!

Shoulders to knees? Must have been a slow pitch guy.

That's about when I would start having my pitcher throw all of her pitches up around the shoulders! ?:)
