Getting Drunk at Fastpitch Tournaments

I've seen quite a few parents make fools of themselves at games without the help of alcohol.

I don't see anything wrong with kicking back with a beer after the game back at the hotel or restaurant.

I don't have a problem with the parents tipping 1 or 2 at the games, never the coaches. Maybe we have been blessed with a bunch of responsible parents. I don't believe we have ever had a coach that couldn't wait until we were back at the hotel.

I have seen many make fools of themselves, some with the assistance of alcohol and many more without. Either way, it is the child that is saddled with the embarrassment of the parents behavior.

My 2 pennies...

If I ever see a coach from our organization drinking AT a game, I will make sure that that persons coaching tenure is terminated. Now that being said, having a drink-beer with the parents around the pool after the game is acceptable - if it acceptable with the parents.

I am just saying - use discretion. You are a role model not only to the players but to the organization you represent. I enjoy an adult beverage, especially on a hot day, but I am a coach first - a socializer second. Priorities must be established. JMHO

Im going back to my statement. After game time is one thing, at the park you are there for the kids, i have used this time for vacation as well, but at the park is just wrong. My girls would not mind if I had one but I am there for them not me, so have some at dinner, hotel kick back and relax. NOT ON THE FIELD parent or coaches, if you cant there may be a bigger problem. It will dehydrate you, and what are you teaching the kids, you cant spend a day at the park just drinking water, pop, gatoraide.

No, I am teaching my dd that you can drink responsibly, with friends, when you are an adult. If she was to get all caught up in the fact that I am drinking at a ball game, what would she think about all those Indians fans at the Pro?! LoL

Why make enjoying yourself with a beer or two such taboo. I am there for my dd, but I am no martyr.

Hey, my parents can do what they wish. When I go to an Indians or Clippers game, I enjoy a couple. But when I am coaching... that is not going to happen. Do you see any coaches on TV with a beer in their hand (since the 60s I should add)? Coaching girls FP softball has a few unwritten rules. Not drinking AT games should be one of them.

Johnnies,

Don't get me wrong, I am speaking from a parents perspective. I whole heartedly agree that coaches should not be drinking before, during or inbetween games. They can wait until the day is done and then they need to be responsible enough to stop early enough so their head is clear for the next day. JMHO

3dm~I think your perspective and mine are the same. Coaches....not at the fields. Parents, be responsible and if you can handle yourself with a beer at the fields then so be it. My husband is one who will (on occasion) have one at the fields. Not often but if it is offered he will do so. Does he get hammered, no way. Not ever at softball. If you didn't see him actually open it and drink it you would never have a clue he did at all. It all depends on the person and their tolerance and I think personality plays into this....again as a parent. So i understand what you are saying.JMHO~

As far as what Warren was talking about in the beginning...that is unacceptable in any situation.

Big difference between having a beer and being drunk....for most people....so that is all it takes and if that is the case they should refrain...............

I am not a drinker because I don't like the taste of it, but far be it for me to deny anyone else. I had a bad situation with this. We were at a hotel for a tournament and our team paid for the girls rooms. Parents had to get their own, but we let the parents who were alone be room mothers so they didn't have to get a room for themselves. The room mothers were told to make sure the girls were in bed by 10. One mother thought it was a good idea to make her room the drinking room where all the coolers full of alcohol were and they stayed up all night drinking. The girls in that room were up until 2am ordering pizza, running around the hotel, and scaling the 2nd floor balconies from room to room while the "responsible adult chaperones" were getting hammered in the team room. It is like those proclaimers on the plastic bags from the grocery stores. You wonder who is stupid enough to use those bags as a toy and put them into cribs, but there must have been alot of idiots who do it or they wouldn't need to print it on the bag. You would think that people would remember they are at a girls softball tournament and use common sense, but that isn't always the case. Alcohol used responsibly by adults....I don't see any problem with that.

BTW Steam, I never actually kept a count, but I decided in my 20s that getting trashed was not something I liked to do, so I've never done it since. Besides, as I have aged, beer just makes me sleepy, and i know that snoring is not conducive to a party atmosphere.

I don't know about not being conducive to a party atmosphere. There are a lot of things that would liven a party.

1.Put shaving cream in your hand and take a piece of straw and tickle your nose.
2. Put your hand in a bowl of warm water (as long as the party is being held at your house)

and so on.... :lmao:

Nope, dark beer was not rhetoric. I just don't see the need to drink 20 of them to enjoy the taste. After the first 2 or 3, you could substitute "old Chicago" beer and most people couldn't tell the difference. Actually if you drink Bud Lite, you can't tell the difference to begin with.

I'm never thirsty enough to drink something that requires you to "acquire the taste"... that's my opinion of ALL beers... I know, man card will be checked on that statement, oh well.

Being a coach you might consider taking a dive for the weekend and wait till you get home or I guess the hotel is ok. Ultimately it's a personal choice just as smoking or working on a chew is... For my team, they won't see me drinking at any game or after. I'm far from being a prude, just think I'm expected to project an image that is healthy (IMO) all the time or as much as possible. With the need to stay hydrated, I'll take a Gatoraid or Mountain Dew on the weekends. That's the least I could do for my own kids and the DD's and their families that come to play for me. By know means is this a policy, just my own belief.

I also don't mind laughing at the "bitter beer faced" folks either. It's all good.

I will say having drunk umpires or an umpire that still has the breathe of the night before (like this past week at our league) is unreal!
