Can a TD alter the rules of a tournament if it is an ASA Eastern National Qualifier? For example...no drop third strike, no stealing home??

no way should they do this especially if it is listed as a travel tournament and if they do they should refund all serious teams money

I cannot find my rulebook so I am relying on my memory, which has been known to fail me from time to time :D.....

I believe the rule is that the rules can be modified for tournaments and league play that does not lead to Championship Play.

You can do some funky things in pool play games of tournaments, and still be a sanctioned qualifier as long as you observe the standard rules in elimination play.

The pool play games are just games, so to speak. The elimination tournament is the real qualifier.

That is what i thought also. Yes it is 10u. Think we could talk ManitouDan to go down home and turn this thing around? He ran this tournament last year, and from what everyone said it was a great tournament. I feel it is heading down the wrong path.

Warren Jones was at our tournament yesterday and was telling me and the umpires, that he wants all National Qualifiers ran to the letter of the rulebook. He also told me that there has to be double-elimination to determine the tournament winner also.

With that being said, crazier things have happened before.

Could this be that Warren was discussing qualifiers for the ASA USA Nationals and not for the regional nationals? If not, maybe he was just explaining what he wants to see in future years? I highly doubt that winners of tournaments this year offering ASA Eastern Nationals berths will not be allowed to participate in Eastern Nationals simply because the qualifier was not run as a double elimination tourney. It wasn't so long ago that you didn't even need to qualify for Eastern Nationals or, phrased differently, you simply qualified by sending in you check for the entry fee.

I can not speak for Warren, but I can tell you what precipatated the response from him. When I booked this tournament with the ASA back in mid January, I asked Warren if I could run it as some sort of National Qualifier. Warren told me to run as an Eastern-National Qualifier and to do this I needed double-elim.

A team asked me Saturday why we had switched from 3 game pool/single elim because it put 14 more games on the schedule combined for the 3 groups and put us out there later on Sunday than in past years . I told them what I was told when I booked the event with Warren in ear shot. This is when Warren told us (me, tournament UIC, a couple of umpires on break) this.

He may mean the future or myself and him may have our wires crossed on "National Qualifier" which is easy to do when you read the ASA code. :D

I do hope they don't take the route of other sanctions and pass berths out like candy. It cheapens the tournaments when they do that.
