First day of bracket play. Buckeye Heat 95 wins over Virginia Extreme Force 3-1 in a well-played game. Extreme Force had only three errors, two in the first inning that resulted in two runs for BH95. BH95 had no errors.

The umpiring in this game was so very good. Always hustling to be in the right position. Consistent in the strike zone. Letting the play develop before making a premature call. Heck, home plate umpire even told field umpire at one point that the cuff of his sleeve had turned up and needed to be adjusted.

The four field complex (Moyer) was even more impressive than those nice fields at Marathon in Findlay. Bathrooms and water fountains in every dugout. Huge scoring/P.A./umpires tower. All the pregame chores taken care of 20 minutes before game in that tower. In our case, unbeknown to us the scheduled home plate umpire knew the head coach of the Extreme Force fairly well, that fact was volunteered, and a new home plate umpire was assigned.

Bretman would have been proud.

Sounds like an awesome complex, and wow, bathrooms in every dugout. Maybe they could add A/C. :)

@Merlion:

The current manager of the Moyer complex, who also supervised the construction of the complex, spoke at the coaches meeting and when the issue of keeping the players safe in the heat came up, someone asked whether there was an electricity source in the dugouts (thinking, I'm sure about a fan). Manager got a small contrite smile on his face and said "that's one of the things I missed when we built the place".

Buckeye Heat 95 wins its second pool game 5-2 against Xtreme Fastpitch out of Pennsylvania. Had only one error and remarkably got out of a bases-loaded, no outs situation mid-game. As pool play was structured in a "winners play winners; losers play losers" four team setup, BH95 earns a number one seed. Draw for bracket play is tonight at 8:00 pm. Because Region 9 has the most teams, those Region 9 #1 seeds will pull in alphabetical order. Draws that would result in a team playing another team from the same Region will be redrawn. Similarly, a draw that pitted teams from the same pool would be redrawn.

Ran into some of our fellow Ohio teams on the way out of the park. Ohio Ice also earned a #1 seed and Ashland Blaze split their pool games; I'm not sure in what order.

Doesn't look like scores are being updated at the web site address, so hopefully other Ohio teams that are in Salem will post their results.

Oh, BTW, the fields at the Moyer complex also have built in sprinkler systems and the sprinklers are turned on after every game. Girls got to romp through the sprinklers after their second game today.

Bustos Ultimates 1-1 in pool. 2 seed for bracket.
Ofc Blast 2-0 in pool. 1 seed.
Buckeye Heat #1 seed overall.
Not sure about others.
Good luck to all Ohio teams. Let's make it an all Ohio final.

@cksmith:

Thanks for the updates. I'm not sure, however, that it is accurate to say Buckeye Heat 95 was/is the #1 seed overall. The tournament did not rank the #1 seeds by things like runs allowed, runs scored, etc. etc. Buckeye Heat 95 did get to pull for the draw first but that was simply because Region 9 has the most teams in this tournament and Buckeye Heat 95 was alphabetically the first #1 seed from Region 9. Who knew that a change in the organization's name several years ago from "Worthington Heat" to "Buckeye Heat" would have such an effect. :D

We play at noon Friday against the winner of an early morning match-up between the Quarter Stix and Lower South Liberty.

Complete pool play results and a bracket are now available on the "Salem" web site: http://www.salemva.gov/depts/parks_rec/tournaments/asayouth2011/brackets.aspx
Results have not however been updated on the "piedmont" web site.

OFC Blast also 3-0. Winning this morning 11-4 (I think) in bracket. Looks like Ohio is doing very well...

Ashland Blaze also won its first bracket game. We play them tomorrow at 8:00 am. Our last match-up at Shreve was very closely contested, so it should be a great game. And at least one Ohio team will stay in the winner's bracket. :D

BTW, in the game against Lower South Liberty, our bats finally woke up. We had 15 hits including one HR and one that missed by inches. But the really neat thing is we had small ball hits that opened up the long ball game and vice-versa. One suicide squeeze that the home plate umpire would later describe as one of the best executed suicides she had ever seen and a second suicide squeeze where the HR player laid it down with two strikes and the defense playing her for her power. Defensively, we continued to play solidly. I think there was only one error, giving us two errors over three games. May the Softball Gods continue to bless us with strong defensive plays . . .

After playing an exceptionally poor game to put us in the loser's bracket first round, the Breakers are still alive beating the Sunraze 5-2 and Crush Fastpitch 6-2. Know we've got someone coming out of the winner's bracket next, and as many as 4 games Saturday if we can keep winning. Good luck to all the Ohio teams!

Buckeye Heat 95 wins its 8:00 am game against Ashland Blaze, 8-0 in five innings. Small ball again helped to create long ball opportunities.

In its noon game, BH95 beat TNT Explosion from West Virginia 3-0. They were down to 9 players because of injuries. This game we made good contact with the ball but couldn't find much open space. We won by manufacturing runs from the few who got on base. Mostly it was moving the runner with small ball and aggressive base running.

This evening at 6:00 pm we play Ohio Ice Silver, who beat OFC Blast. The 6:00 pm games in the winner's bracket represent the final four in the bracket. I'm not sure who the other two teams are.

BTW, it was huge today that in both of our games the starting pitcher went the full seven. That leaves a fresh starting pitcher and a fresh reliever for the 6:00 pm game.

Tomorrow loser's bracket starts at 8:00 am, the winner's bracket finals are at 10:00 am, the championship game is at 2:00 pm and the if then game would be at 4:00 pm.

All of this scheduling is subject to the rain holding off. We have a 50/50 change on that according to the weather channel, but as I look out of our hotel window, that seems a little optimistic.

Ohio Ice Silver went 2-0 in pool play. Won their first bracket game 3-2 in an international against Virginia Extreme Force. Won their game this morning 8-0 in 6 innings against Newtown Rock Blue (PA). Won our second game today against OFC 1-0 (great game played by both teams). Looking forward to game tonight (Ohio vs. Ohio) at 6PM. Ohio is well represented here.

After a very exciting 4-3 win over Newtown Rock Blue, Breakers lost 4-0 to Valley Extreme - Black to finish tied for 13th I believe.
