24 hours to accept, really?!

Carol, I did not in any way reference your recollections in my off-the-wall post. I'm in no way demeaning your recollection and I never suggested otherwise.

My post was simply to point out the impracticality of holding tryouts on one weekend. It would be a system that was slanted in the favor of the larger organizations or well established teams. Parents and players would simply not have enough time or energy to attend more than four tryouts at the most. That is if you could get all of the age groups, teams, and weather to co-operate with you.

Those of us who live in rural parts of the state would be denied a fair market to operate in, whether we be players looking for a good fit or a team trying to get good players. Our plans to attend three different tryouts changed because of external factors. How would narrowing the time allotment down to the daylight hours of two separate days help?

Then post your objections to the proposal in straight up terms. But to suggest that I was proposing something like the WWFL or whatever it is called is really annoying and it REALLY ignores my concern for the emotions of the young ladies during the silly season. You and I are lemmings, but I will tell you straight out that I am ****ed at you for the irony with respect to the emotional roller coaster that the players have to ride during the tryout season. We can discuss the rest of this off-line or you can call me at 740-398-6139. Cage wrestling . . . . really?

And by the way, as a lemming, I thought Howard was suggesting that the players should limit their try-outs to the teams their daughters had a real shot at making. Or was I wrong in that.

Carol, please don't put words in my mouth. I didn't say anything about how difficult it was for the players or belittle them in any way.

I will leave it to the readers to decide what you meant with respect to your cage wrestling and other references.

I don't disagree that players shouldn't limit their tryouts. At the same time, who am I to tell my daughter not to try out for any team on her list? I try not to put limits on her aspirations and dreams.

CGS....take a deep breathe for a second...I understand how you feel, but I think cshilt was merely making fun of the situation, not the emotions of the kids.

I know how nervous a lot of these girls are when they come to tryouts, especially when they see me walking by them with my ominous clip-board. I have 4 daughters and I know how fragile they can be sometimes (and how much tougher than I'l ever be) but i did not take his comments as making light of them, more of the adults 'running things'.

But I do have a sincere idea...what about having a tryout like the NFL combines? Get a big complex with six or more fields, and invite all the coaches in the area and all the players. The coaches can sit in the stands and watch the players and make their picks based on that...no travelling...mucho, mucho planning in this, but I think it would be more practical than going from try out to try out...of course you would have to have regional tryouts, the whole state couldn't go all at the same place....just a thought

And you can't limit that to four teams or however many teams you can arrange a private tryout with? By Howard's proposal that would be at least $2000 and I sure wasn't proposing that in my posts.

I don't know what the "other references" are. The cage wrestling was simply a metaphor for the teams/coaches "duking" it out for the players. I'm sorry you took exception to it.

Well maybe it is good to have one semi-lemming who has an eye on the roller coaster for the girls. The problem that I was trying to address was the number of girls who are left out there hanging for more than a week. You have a better proposal, present it. But spare me the cage wrestling irony, ok, because I am betting there are a fair number of parents out there this week trying to decide how they get their DD onto a team of the caliber they want AND how to stop the tears.

Just brainstorming here - an alternate approach to holding all the tryouts on one weekend would be to agree on an earliest date that responses could be required. For example, in 2011, teams could hold tryouts 8/13-21 but couldn't require a response before 8/22. Teams could make their offers at any time and families could respond earlier than 8/22 if they want to, but they wouldn't be required to respond before they had a chance to attend tryouts on the 2nd weekend.

Lots of luck on regulating the tryout season though...

Honestly, without a regulating body and some kind of penalty, nothing will change. Heck even with a penalty, you'll still have organizations try everything to get away with it. Look at the rules in any college sport. Most violators aren't caught until years after the fact, by then its a moot point.

OK, I've taken a deep breath and I want to apologize to cshilt for coming down so hard on his parody of my suggestion that there be one weekend for tryouts. I over-reacted, plain and simple and I probably did put words into his mouth. Sorry guys.

Nope, not running for cover in any legal sense. I can assure you that nothing I said was actionable nor that I posted my apology because I was afraid of being sued. I have no assets that could be subject to a creditor so if cshilt wanted to sue me in reponse to my opinion regarding his parody, it would be a hollow exercise. I spend most of my assets on volunteering as a coach. :D
