Another OHSAA/Select Eligibility Question...

If the OHSAA states indoor softball is not a sport and thus girls can play indoor while playing softball for their schools, would that not carry over to indoor practices say with their select teams?

Just curious...

4.7 cover indoors, but your answer is NO. ? 4.7 indoors is more of a concern when you have more than 4 kids from one school or the coach involved. ? ?Read 4.3 ? ohssa.org ?Covers if your high school ?season has started you cannot play -practice with another team. ?

Think you will find that indoor practice is considered participation, and thus not permitted in-season. Fine line, but I'd err on the side of caution.

The OHSAA says that a player is not a member of a school team until the first scrimmage or game, thus in all reality she could continue to practice until the first contest.
On the other hand, we go along with BearMay and stay cautious. We tell them that once the official practice begins, the girl should stay with her high school team and not practice with her summer squad.

For our team, it is up to the player's school ball coach, once the coach says he would rather they only practiced with the school team, that's the date. We err very much on the side of caution as we do not want to cause any concern for a player's eligibility.

However, just for giggles I was reading through the regulations and it seems to me that it definitely says the girls can play indoor softball all they want because it is not considered the same sport (or not a sport at all by the OHSAA) and school team softball. My take on this is that all the school ball girls could play indoor softball together year round. And if they could play indoor all year reound, couldn't they practice as well since the game indoors is 'not a sport'?

Like I said, just wondering what anyone else's take is on it...

I think you need to read 4.24 ?It clearly states practice is forbidden. ? It doesn't state indoors or outdoors! ? I would check with your school AD, but ?we are told no contact after the season starts. ?For that reason we do not allow any of our players to play indoors after the season starts. ?Keep in mind the ?intent of 4.7 ?as defined by OHHSAA. . ? This is why you need to get your AD not your high school coach involved ? on any decision.

It would be easier if the OHSAA would simply say what it meant. That would be something like, "Indoor softball is still softball for all purposes with one exception: More than four girls from one school will be permitted to play in an indoor league together at any time, but they cannot be coached by the school coaching staff."

Then they could state that the league must not take place at an individual school and that at least 4 teams (or however many) must be in the league, to keep a school from just forming a "league" with its own 2 or 3 teams and playing organized games in its own gym all winter.

That is kinda of what I was trying to figure out. It is just common sense to me that once school ball starts, select stops. But for the regs to specify indoors as not a recognized sport, it seems to me that an intentional loophole was made.

It would be easier to just say once the school season starts, that is what is played and only that until the season ends!

And for those of you who did not read the upper posts, NONE of our girls participate in ANY softball activities out side of school ball once it starts and until it ends. Our coach happens to be our AD.

And I'll type again, I WAS JUST WONDERING!!! geesh!!

If this is the case, why would you come on here and ask, when you would be able to get it from the most knowledgeable source you have....your Coach and A.D.?

I am not sure who the most knowlegeable person is... I have way too many high school coaches ask me about eligibility questions.

Because I come here to hear what other people think about different subjects. I figured that was kind of the purpose of the OFC, or a pretty important part of it anyway...

Anyway, I still think it is an interesting topic and I appreciate your 'opinion'

Had an official from OHSAA visit the high school of our daughter.....was there for all incoming freshman who had aspirations of playing a sport for the high school......being a travel ball coach wanted to verify for myself what the rules were.......he told me that once school ball starts formal practice....not conditioning....not open gym but the first formal practice....it is not okay for them to practice with another team.....once the coach releases them then they can go to travel ball or wherever.....hitting lessons or pitching lessons on an individual basis are ok as well but was told they could ask for verification that it is truly an accredited instructor if they want to....bottom line...once the school coach gets them better to leave them alone until school ball is over!

So what exactly are the dates for the high school girls that they are allowed to practice with their travel teams until high school starts? I know that pitchers and catchers have one date then rest of team another.

Thanks, Gary

JOE A , makes a good point. Many of us have been around OHSAA rules for some time and still you get different views. Many of the rules are written as Joe stated , not clearly. AD's attend for all sports and some of those same rules apply to softball. That is why I stated the AD, Just reading the softball section can sometimes get you in trouble.
