I have tryed to find out an answer to my question but have gotten both yes and no answers. Can anyone help? Assistant high school softball coach also coach's 16U travel team. He wants to have travel team practice now (before Feb. 23rd cutoff) but has 3 girls that also play high school ball which he helps coach. Can he coach the travel teams practices now with the 3 girls? Can he coach the travel team now if only one girl plays both high school and his travel team if it is his daughter? Thank you for any help!

I am in the same situation with my coaching and I will tell you what I know and how I understand it is to be done..... The asst. Coach cannot have the 3 girls from his highscool participate in his travel ball practices or he is violating OHSAA rules for coaching highschool players during a time that it is not allowed. This includes his own daughter being in a team setting. ( can still throw a ball etc with daughter, not in a team setting)

1 exception- if any of the 3 girls are incoming freshman and they have not played in a highschool preview or showcase then they are not yet considered interscholastic players and the coach may coach them until such time..

I am just posting my understanding of the rules, as am in the exact same position with highschool and travel, and a daughter to boot. My only difference as of now is I am at the U14 age and my players are not yet at the highschool, but I already know in the upcoming years that I will not be able to instruct them before school ball starts.

I hope this helps you out, as the rules are pretty clear, it is just some bend and break them around this time of year and it just depends on who you listen too.

Also If I happen to be wrong on this issue, gently let me know by pointing out specific rules allowing other alternative actions.. thanks

sponsored by the Board of Education or other governing board shall not participate
in a non-interscholastic program (tryouts, practice or contest) as an individual or
as a member of a team in the sport of softball during the school?s season

(Sports Regulation 4.3).

4.2) A member of an interscholastic softball squad (any student who has played in a scrimmage, preview or regular season/tournament game as a substitute or starter)
sponsored by the Board of Education or other governing board may participate in
non-interscholastic softball prior to and after the school season under the following
conditions:

4.21) The number of interscholastic softball players from the same school on a non-interscholastic squad is limited to four on the roster of that non-interscholastic
squad. A roster is defined as all the members of the entire squad on that non-interscholastic squad.
Note: Graduating seniors who are participating on a non-interscholastic softball
squad after their final interscholastic contest of the season in the sport of
softball are exempt from this limitation.

4.22) There is no limit on the number of softball squad members from the same

This is not a violation since the OHSAA only recognizes fast pitch softball as a sport.

4.5) An intramural team is a non-interscholastic team (Sports Regulation 4.1), and all rules for non-interscholastic teams apply.

4.6) All-Star Games There are many directors of non-interscholastic competitions that use the term All-Star in describing their events. Student-athletes in team sports who wish to participate in one of these all-star competitions outside the
interscholastic season of their sports may do so without jeopardy to eligibility
provided the students maintain compliance with Sports Regulations 4.3 and 4.5.

6) No Contact Period Coaches

non-interscholastic softball squad while a member of the schools interscholastic
softball squad) or any OHSAA regulations for any member of the school squad
EXCEPT a senior is ineligibility for the remainder of the interscholastic softball
season or the ensuing softball season. For a senior, the maximum penalty shall be
ineligibility for the remainder of the school year.

7.2) The penalty for a coach for violation of Sports Regulation 4 (non-interscholastic

Sorry I know this is long and these OHSAA Rules may be found at:

Technically the answer to your question/s is No! He could cause the girls to become ineligble to play High School Softball and be penalized himself.

FASTPITCH! Anything else and you're playing to SLOW!

The only time you can coach those other girls is in the months of June and July and then only 10 times. As for coaching your own daughter, Crush1 is probably technically right but I have yet to hear of anyone who was taken to task by OHSAA for coaching their own daughter ... I think that would be political suicide for them.

coachjwb:

The rule that you are describing only applies if there are more than 4 players from that HS on the travel ball team. During travel ball season a HS coach can coach a travel ball team with as many contacts as he or she wants, as long as there are no more than 4 girls from his HS team on the travel ball team.

....they can coach only 10 days other than June thru July but it eats up the 10 days rule for all the highschool coaches of that school?Nationals don't count?

There is an exception in the rules that allows them to coach their own players on their own travel team unlimited in June-July, as long as there are four or fewer girls from the school on that team. I don't have time to find that rule and paste it, but it's there.

To answer the first question....No that assistant coach cannot coach or instruct those girls from his HS. If he does he is breaking the OHSAA rule and could be in trouble.

The second thing is as long as you stay below the 4 player minimum you can coach or instruct those players all you want throughout the months of June and July. Get four or more and you have to stay within the 10 day limit. Which is 10 per school not per coach.

From what I can gather from reading throught the rules it should not be an issue as long as there are 4 or less girls from the same HS and it is before Pitchers/Catchers report or after the players are released from their HS team.

The questions I would have would be:

Was the coach under contract last year or is he/she a first year assistant that has not yet signed a contract?

Have the players played for the HS before.

YES, he can coach as there are 4 or less girls on his team, Coach no contact period goes from Aug. 9th to Sept 6th in 2010...

What is (before Feb. 23rd cutoff) there is no Feb. 23rd cutoff date, the cutoff date is once the high school team has a scrimmage, preview or regular season/tournament game as a substitute or starter. Or Mar. 29 Season Begins, which ever comes first.

Parma, Both L Knights and I live this very scenario which was asked about, knights having more experience at it than I and both of us know that we cannot, instruct our own highschool players during this time prior to the start of pitchers and cathcers, regardless if it is less than 4. ( if this is the question you were answering Yes to) In an effort not to confuse those reading this topic, and to help me out if im wrong, could you post the rule or explain how the coach would be allowed.

I'm pretty sure that the no contact dates are not the only dates per year that we cannot instruct our highschool players.. I could be wrong.. it's happened before... once I think... j/k lol

GENERAL SPORTS REGULATIONS OHSAA:
5.3) Individual skill instruction may be received in any sport by a squad member at any time in individual
or group lessons. The coach may not conduct individual or group lessons for a squad
member except during June 1-July 31 and during the season of the sport.

From the end of the no contact period in early September (Sept 7, 2009) until the first day of pitchers and catchers (Feb 22, 2010) there can be absolutely no coaching or instruction of any kind, by a HS coach or an assistant, even if it's only one. The 4 player rule does not apply in this situation or this time period. The 4 player rule is only in affect during the months of June and July, and in 2010 those dates would be from June 12 until August 9.

Those who think a HS coach or assistant can be coaching or giving instructions right now are "dead wrong" and will pay the consequences if your caught. I've been coaching HS ball for 8 years, and have read these rules a hundred times or more and no one will convince me otherwise.

Shayne is right. High school coaches cannot coach girls right now, or at any time besides the high school season or June and July (or at a Nationals in the first week of August or whenever that exception for Nationals expires).

Yes I agree, i was stuck on the 4 player rule and was not thinking of it being the coach that was coaching them...

Sorry, my mistake about the June-July thing if 4 players or less ... I knew that but had forgotten it I guess. But yes, definitely no contact right now.

We must be getting close to high school ball again. Seems we go thru this every year.
Shayne, we got another transfer that plays travel ball. Freshman, showed up for open hitting last night. Will test Swifty when it comes to speed.

To be clear, girls can continue to play and be coached by non-school coaches as long as there are not more than 4 playing together, until their first school game or scrimmage?
There never seems to be a way to put it down so it is absolutely clear.

Typically up to when catchers and pitchers report on Feb 22nd, but always better to be safe and verify with your schools AD or Varsity Softball Coach

Would that be June 1st?

Also, if the high school team's season ends in mid-May, I assume the high school coach still has to wait until June 1st to coach any of their players? Thanks.

No! June 12 is the last official day of HS ball in 2010.

As mentioned at the States Rules Interpretation meeting today. The State tourney could be over and HS teams could be still making up games, because the official end to HS ball is June 12. So if a HS coach wanted to he could practice with those players till June 12 and not release them till after the June 12th date. Won't happen, but could.
