Another ohsaa/travel question

Sorry - I meant if they were already released. So if you are a high school coach, the season is over mid-May, you have released all of your players, you still have to wait until June 12th to coach any of them?

I don't mean to be argumentative but I've never heard the date given as the end of the state tournament, just described as June and July. I always assumed if they were released, everything was good. Just want to make sure everything is done right.

Even though teams may be done with playing games, and have been knocked out of the tourney the official end of the HS season is June 12 in 2010. So in reality a HS team could be out of the tourney and still playing games up until June 12. If we ever had a really bad winter or snow for an extended period of time, there could be a chance that teams were finishing up their HS Conference schedule after the State tourney.

My HS team was knocked out the first round last year but we still had a conference game to play so we had an additional week added on to our season after being knocked out of the tourney. If you are a team that is making a state run and still have conference games to play you could have to play them after the State Championships are over. So the season is not over after the tourney, it's June 12 or as soon as you have completed your season.

***There other reason that June 12 date is so important to remember is that your 10 contact days do not start till after that date. So if you are done with your season mid May you could still have unlimited instruction or practice with any of your HS players without worrying about the 4 player and under rule.

Thanks for the info - it is really helpful. This is the part that I am trying to understand better. Since you are a high school and travel coach, if your high school season is over 5/30 and you officially release your players, can you coach them on your travel ball team 6/1 or do you still have to wait until 6/12?

I think everyone has always thought of June 1 as the date, but I could make an argument for either June 1 or June 12 based on a reading of the bylaws. I think the difficult thing is that the issue between June 1 and "end of the season" is something the I would guess the OHSAA never considered when adopting these rules. That's why trying to make sense of it is so frustrating.

Nothing written in stone, but as I have known it, since I started coaching HS ball is that the HS season is over after you play your last game of the season, which is usually after your last tourney game. But for my HS team the last two years we have had to make up conference games after our tourney game. Really hard to motivate girls and keep them coming to practice to play in a meaningless conference game. Our league has an all conference trophy so all games have to be played to determine points. So the point I was trying to make isthe season is not over till it's over. And if a HS coach doesn't have all his games in, and he could find another HS team willing to play, in reality, and in accordance with OHSAA rules he could continue to play games up till June 12 and then everyone would then be automatically released because the season would now be considered over.

I will say though... she did get back to you in a reasonable amount of time... usually within 24 hours... and that is all a person can expect. But, talking circles is what I am getting at....lol

Hope to see you too, Blue. Can't wait for Spring to come.
