There is a flaw in the system of background checks. We discovered this a few years ago. If a person is charged and a warrant is issued, but the person comes in on their own (no arrest) and goes through the court process and it ends with a dismissal, reduced charge or a plea agreement and the person never sees a jail then this arrest will not show up on his/her record. Most smaller agencies now do not do finger printing they allow the jail to do it. BUT if the person never goes into the jail, they are never fingerprinted!! This is the only way that the cases can be tracked.
This is why I say to ALSO check your local courts for cases. You would be surprised how many don't show up on a check. Another thing to be aware of, they only put certain cases on their records - traffic, felonies, and violent offenses not your disorderly conducts and things like that.
But the good news.......most of these people really don't want to be your childs coach. Most of these won't even try, thank god, but occasionally someone just doesn't get it and tries to be a coach.
I think we should have psych evals for all coaches!!!
