Background checks

ringer,
exactly,...everytime i turn on the news it's..."columbus public teacher...(wth? again?)" and this is despite the checks....(not to mention the latest bus driver fiasco--what's next, public school custodian/lunch lady background checks?)
no amount of checks will deter or catch all, because if these people want to get closer to kids than they will find a way, nevertheless, the system that does so is arbitrary and not user freindly...

it's alot of money to shell out, especially when you can google them most of the time anyhow..
there either has to be an easier way, at less of a cost for thos einvolved OR you make it part of a licensing program--but if you do that, then EVERY coach for travel ball would become enrolled in some ASA/NSA governing body that would oversee such matters...and whenever governing bodies get together, it costs the regular guy more money, and when someone falls through the cracks, they'll be heads that roll....

it's a very dicey situation, because we want what is best for girls, we (some) people take objection to being background checked from conspiracy theories to "I've never had a drink since '74" stories or the high and mighty, "I've been coaching for yadda-yadda years." Either way, if it's easy to do, and make it part of an overall non-intrusive program (because I can see a governing body making coaches--and I'm sure some school coahces already/maybe having to do this, not so for travel coaches who don't normally coach in a school setting-- go to inservices, training, etc. that in the end costs more....i mean, sokker coaches pay all these fees to be licensed and trained, and they don't have any background checks filtered into the fine print....

I used to be a youth minister and we were discussing the background check isssues on our volunteer teachers at our church. The Childs safety was most important and the insurance company was a big motivator.

Just having people sign that they would take a background check can be a deterent for people with something to hide.

all seriousness here Ringer (I don't believe I know you and I mean nothing personal) Most parents/volunteers WILL pay to have that stuff done $25-$30 and it was a red flag when a volunteer wouldn't using that or any excuse. The service we used included fingerprinting - and background checks that looked for any child endangering or violence crimes. wasn't details that we were given in a search.

Its been a couple years and I don't remember the service we used.

DB, I very rarely take things personal, (except umpires blowing calls). This is a controversial subject between personal privacy & child safety. Either way you go there will be issues, so do you err on the side of safety? The common sense answer is yes....until someone asks you to pay so they can dig up some dirt on you. Background checks for a job are different, the hiring company pays for it and they a writing the paychecks. I have no problem with being background checked, have at it, just don't send me a bill. I already spend enough of my own money AND time on training aids, gas, equipment, clinics, etc.
