My dd will not play 3rd base without one and if a college coach doesn't want her because of that I am fine with it. She broke a bone in her hand at 14u ASA Nationals this year because a girl hit a ball so hard and had such a wicked curve on it she was unable to catch it. I look at coaches who would not take a kid because she wore a mask the same I look at old school football coaches who withheld water from their players to toughen them up. Idiots, and that's being nice because I am on a public forum.

Ask Les as a girl on his team hit a ball so hard on an intentional walk, her glove came off and they won the game.

We teach how to hit the ball from the nose to the toes and the only person to have a strike zone is the umpire!

We have a contact zone.

Wear a mask or take the risk and it is that simple. Explain, complain or justify your logic or reason in my opinion.

Live with the results of your judgement.....

Go to a higher level mens slow pitch game, the pitcher looks like a hockey goalie.
I'm late in the game on this thread but was going to post about seeing men play at Berliner last weekend and, not only did the pitcher have a mask on but so did the 3B. As far as the equipment getting much better (dangerously so), one of my earliest memories of softball was 35+ years ago and a SS playing deep took a bad hop to the face with old equipment. My opinion is that everything has come "up a notch", the level of ability, the athletisicm of the athletes, the speed of the pitchers, AND the equipment. I view this as a natural progression and is as it should be. If us old guys get on the field with top-notch hitters, we are in danger. If top-notch fielders get on the field with to-notch hitters, it's all good. JMHO.
