Be careful celebrating

Hello Folks,

I saw a batter-runner stroke a home run in a tournament game today just to be called out out at home, because her teammates touched her before she touched home plate. A very game changing play, and one that is not recovered from quickly.

That was crazy. We watched it happen in the bottom of the 1st inning in the Desale vs Granville game. Fortunetly Desales went on to get the 3-2 victory as they were the team this happened to. WOW!

If a coach gives a high five cant the runner be called out?For the same thing.

No.. the rule about all of this is just not there. The only rule is "if she was assisted" to help her get to a base.

Obviously, hitting a home run... no runner needs to be assisted and a "high five" is not assisting a batter.

The coach should have been smart enough to put the game under "protest" in case they lost.

Once again.... stupid umpire - stupid coach.

Correct me if I'm wrong Bretman.. but that rule is only in college games if I am correct.

I guess you can't protest in OHSAA softball.

Now, that stupid that a coach can't protest a rule... I guess OHSAA figures they don't have good umpires so to protect their screw-ups.... that eliminated the right of coaches to "protest" stupid umpires.

Go figure.

Correct me if I'm wrong Bretman.. but that rule is only in college games if I am correct.

The college/NCAA rule (which is only a year or two old, I think) is that no offensive PLAYER, other than another runner, may touch a runner who is running the bases before the runner touches the plate. Their rule DOES NOT prohibit a base coach from giving the runner a high-five as she trots around third following a home run.

And even if a player does touch the runner, it's not automatically an out. Their rule says that if this happens the team gets one warning. No out is called until the team does this a second time.

Their reason for this rule is to prevent a runner from getting mobbed before reaching the plate, which can prevent the umpire from making sure if the runner actually touches the plate or not. That really happened in a game a few years ago, so they invented a rule to address it.

To date, this rule HAS NOT trickled down to any level of ball below college softball.

I'm looking for it too. I'm looking under "batter runner is out" and "runner is out", and "field misconduct" in the NFHS Softball Rule Book. I was told that the Granville Junior Varsity squad was hit with the rule just a couple games before, and that was why it was brought up today. Strange rule though, and I had never heard of it until today. Does anyone know where to find this rule?

There's the list of people to write... all the way down to the Board Members.

Have some guts to write them... or expect the same for years to come.

Calls like this hurt the game so much, emotion in a game is a bad thing ?

she got robbed of a homerun in a playoff game by an umpire for a high five.
