Hitting and Hitters Discussion Bunting tournament

The most important element to a bunt is surprise or catching the other team on their heels. How can a bunt be as effective if the opposing team absolutely knows it's coming?

If a slap to the outfield is an out - what stops an infielder from letting it go?

That is the whole point. batter take the chance. Control at the plate. what stops a player from letting a ball roll foul?

A good example how to do it correctly when a team is prepared for a bunt is in DeeDee Hillman of the OSU Buckeyes she has mastered the bunt and speed to reach 1st base, a close to a 90% effectiveness. I know if I had the choice to field a ball or let it go in the grass for a out it would be a out everytime. It will come down to the Speed of the runner, Pitching and the Umpires eyes.

Would make for a fun practice if you divided the team in two and played each other. Girls would be honing their skills while having fun.

You may want to make it 9 innings or 1 hour 50 minute time limit that may make it a little more attractive to those teams on the fence. Bunt only could be a 30 minute game with a couple of good defensive teams.

I get the idea of "letting the ball roll" foul for an out if it's a bunt on the line, but you'd never purposely let a slapped/dragged ball roll by you into the outfield (only in this game for an out) so why not just leave slapping/dragging in and let the outfield play. Outfield should be learning about back-up positions in any situation anyway and are an essential part of any game. You could still paint an "out" line like three feet into the outfield grass for any balls hit in the air that drop past it. Outfield would be playing just inside that line. It would also solve your problem about the corners setting up really short and crashing for a bunts only game. JMO

Some could split their teams into 2 groups and get more action if only fielding 6, could be a "per team" decision I guess. Might be crazy, just food for thought and to get another look at the setup. Hard for the head coach to be 2 places at once or a small coaching staff and that too would be team dependent.

Lester
this is in the Tournament thread, if they split teams in two or bring two teams from the same organazation it is a $50 per team discount for the entry. http://www.game-ex.com/vb3/showthread.php?t=16189

Lester, I'm hooked on Sonics!!

I am sure there are many teams that will do it and others that will follow later in line. Getting peoples opions either good or bad will help improve things, its all good in the long run. The Price to the Rules being worked out is a normal growth and everything new gets tweaked as things go. Bunting tournament can be good, In paintball the speed ball fields were laughed at when they started, Slam Dunk in basketball was a joke at 1st, Arena football was silly at first, even speed chess matches were looked at funny as put it together the first time. I remember Frisbee Golf when it started but wow it was fun. Its all good!! The word is Modified, some like change some do not.

This sounds like a good idea.Good practice for bunting.Might be a little high on the price but you have to think of all the details. Field rental, umps field crew, trophies, uniforms for first place the list goes on.I think if you charge $300 you will attract some interest plus make a little money you are not going to get rich and i dont think that is your intensions. Anyway good idea John.

I just got alittle miffed at Jdawgs post. All I am trying to do is think of something new to do.

Right now I am working with someone on the east side of ohio to do the same tournament and then maybe a world championship later in October. We are going to try to take this national.
