Chest Thumping

People complain and complain about the chest thumping on this forum yet another thread is started " Who is the best catcher" or who is the best freshman" or who is the best pitcher". ?Those are subjective answers and invite chest thumping. ?

Has ANYONE seen ALL ?the potential candidates IN ALL AGE BRACKETS to give a true opinion of the entire crop of players in the entire state of Ohio? ?

Give me a break, maybe we should start a thread of "Who is the best at posting chest thumping threads?"

Sorry, just another chest thumping opinion and before you jump down my throat.....

JMHO!!!!! ? LOL ?

I agree to disagree....The entire reason people perform or participate in sports or competitive events, is to see who is the best. ?Its not just in sports, but has a part in almost everything we do. ?
So with that being said, once you have competed and won, are you then suppose to just say or do nothing? ?The reward for winning is letting people know and then being recognized by your peers.
Most problems arise when people are envious of someones accomplishments. ?They get there satisfaction from belittling someone elses accomplishments. ?
Call it "Chest Thumping" if you like, but if someone doesn't get it out to the people, no one would ever know, and alot of noteworthy accomplishments would never be recognized.
I use Barry Bonds breaking the homerun record as an example....Had no one reported this history making event in the media, alot of people would never had known of the accomplishment. ?If Barry had then come out and made a public announcement that he had broken Hank Aaron's record in a news conference, he would have be publicly chastised for making mention (chest thumping) of breaking the record. ?Its all in how its perceived.
As Tony Sinclair would say, "everything in moderation."

Wow, I think there's a lot more to playing softball than letting everyone know you won. Besides, the scores are reported at the conclusion of most tournaments - what else does anyone need to know? Let the match-up results speak for themselves.

Any "who's the best" list is meaningless since it's all purely subjective, the ones "voting" are the kids' parents and coaches, plus not everyone involved in fastpitch posts on this forum. And, as stated, no one sees every single team or player in every game.

To use media coverage of a major league record breaking in comparison is completely out of proportion, in my opinion.

Agreed that sometimes these threads get out of hand and take a turn towards immaturity, IMHO ?:). However, I often peruse them because I like to hear the opinions and keep an eye out for teams and individual talent which get nominated, and discussed. I think it is really cool, when you are at a tournament with some time to kill between games and you look at the schedule and see a team that you have been hearing about is on "Field 6" now against some other good team or pitcher (or whatever).

I love this site for the news, as well as individual bits & pieces of odd factoids, opinions, raw data which can be picked up "here and there" to "color/fill in my 'softball' world." May sound unbelieveable, but I am a fan of this game, and the Ohio softball environment, almost as much as I am of my own kid (I did say "almost"). I enjoy the sights, sounds, flavors ..... of the Big Picture (including the other fans). We could sit a round a campfire together talking about this stuff, if the campfire were big enough to host several thousand people, and we were all willing to politely take turns talking, and we could all coordinate our schedules, or we could check in here from time to time to see what's on everyone's mind.

At least the "fistfights" here don't break bones, draw blood, or cost a lot in fines ?::)

And of course the comic section with Ringer and Statman is nice. Oh, and the Slammers section - have they been mentioned yet in this thread? ?;D

Hey MD,

First, thanks for the sense of humor. Second, you are a great example. Being a yankee from "northern" Ohio, I would not know the Wild Thangs from oatmel had you not responded to a thread discussing the top 10u teams earlier this season. Okay, so I then just had to see what the "Wild Thangs" were all about (with a name like that ... ;)), and took some interest at one of the tourneys, NSA States I believe. Anyways it gave something else to do when I saw you were on a field, and I had time on my hands.

Furthermore, how does this help you? ... Well, if I had a friend (okay, let the "you have no firends" jokes fly) from southern Ohio who was interested in travel ball for their kid, I maight just tell them that they should check out the Wild Thangs. I am more knowledgeable about softball around the state now thanks to these threads, and it might even help you somehow. You seem like a decent guy, and your team is very good from all I can recall.

Those are some of the advantages of these types of threads, IMO, especially when they fly straight, for a while at least before they self-destruct.

Now, regarding "Threads Gone Wild" ..... LOL

To be honest, I use the "best" threads for scouting reports for future games. If one of these threads say that playerX is very fast and can steal bases - we are prepared for her in a game. If playerY has hit 20 over in the last 5 games - we will pitcher her off the plate and if we walk her - that's OK also.

I read the "best" threads for that very reason. I also discourage my players and parents not to "tip our hat" and post scouting reports for other teams.

Keep the "chest thumping" alive. ?I love to see the mighty layed low. ?Case in point - most of the chest thumping during the early season seemed to revolve around "The Best 12u Team in Ohio - Ever" and their rival. ?Set themselves up nicely.

Low and behold that "Best Team Ever" gets beat at 12u Pony Nationals by another Ohio team that is extremely good, wears red and comes from a valley. ?That was a good day. ?Must have taught someone (I hope) some humility lessons. ?Interestingly the winning team at Pony Nats didn't boast that they were now the best team in Ohio. ?That too is a lesson in humility and sportmanship.

(BTW - I have no relationship to any of the teams noted above. ?When I did watch them play, the "chest thumping" or lack there of did make the games more interesting though. ? ;) ?)

Now, wait, you took delight in seeing a group of 12-year-old girls lose because an adult had come on this forum and bragged about them - and that's a post in support of chest-thumping?

there's nothing inherently wrong with "chest thumping." I'm sure some of us have done it from time to time, maybe not on the ofc, but somewhere. If anything, it makes you wonder about said teams and gives you the oppurtunity to find a game and watch.
as a newbie here 2 years ago, there was alot of slammer news/slammer lovers and slammer haters. So, when they came to the stingray tourney, i stayed and watched. i probably would not have even cared, but i wanted to see for myself. this year there was alot of talk among the 14/16u best of the best. I tried to see as many games as i could find to make my own conclusions, and even then, it's hard to pick just one. on any given day, anyone of the top 10 could whip each other.
i also added to a chest thumping post regarding the best catchers. it's my opinion, and in no way was degrading anyone elses opinion. after seeing some other names i never knew about, i cant wait until next year so that i can see them face to face. thanks, ofc

"I agree to disagree....The entire reason people perform or participate in sports or competitive events, is to see who is the best. ?Its not just in sports, but has a part in almost everything we do. ?" (per Lady Knight)

Lady Knight, I think that comment above is a sad, demeaning comment. ?Some athletes compete with themselves to acheive there own personal best, hence record being broken is a side line. ?I didn't say they don't deserve recognition, I was talking to parents or coaches that start these threads... "who is the best."

If competing is all about who is best, then why are there so many different levels of say, softball? ?Some do it for exercise, some for fun, some because they want to play in high school, some who want to play in college, some that may dream of the national USA team. ?If being the best was the end all .... why are there so many players with lessor goals. ?

You comment is a disappointment and seems short sighted. ?

All this aside,...the fact is there are many, many extremely talented, young, female athletes in the state of Ohio. ?As we travel from tournament to tournament and I get the opportunity to watch other teams and age groups battle it out on the field, I am always impressed at the talent and athletic ability of these young ladies from the buckeye state. ?When these Ohio teams go to Nationals and win........I don't care what the team, its a proud moment for everyone in OH! ?2007 was a good year for softball in our state and I have no doubt that 2008 will only be better.
Congratulations to all the teams from OHIO and best of luck to you in the year to come!

Well said coach Terry: Many play because of the freinds they make for life. We see statements that we think the sport is getting diluted, with more teams. Who cares. Giving the kids something to enjoy and remember is worth it. It's now all about winning, unless you are talking with the parents. We had kids this year who couldn't tell you the score but they were having fun! We only had one team in my area in 90's now we have many choices and at last count 12 -14u teams. Many are better then what we had, so I think that is great that this many kids want to play softball and we have this many coaches willing to give this much time to the game. .

It is great the way things in Ohio are going. You have to love that the softball keeps getting better and better. You would think we would see more of the big time college coaches at the major tournaments. Maybe this summer they will come after taking notice of the OH teams success on the national level. Good Luck to all teams next year!
