speaking of chest bumping, scott and I will do some sumo wrestling at the next tourney..talk about twins, and i don't mean the man-boobs

The correct terminology is "moobs." Other acceptable verbage would be as follows:

1. Man purse = Murse
2. Men's long shorts = Manprees
3. Guy's eyeliner = Just plain wrong
4. Painted fingernails/toenails on a guy = Did you fall asleep again with your daughters nearby and bored with nothing to do?
5. Mancave = Nothing at all wrong with this.

Mad Hornet-just a general obersevation :)

Doug-I hear you, the odd years are tough. You want your girls to grow but they have to have some success to keep the fire going to work hard. The growing pains you have them going through this year will just make them that much more ready next season.

@Doug Lenos:

It IS a tough decision, even when you are the older team in the age bracket. I worried a lot about our schedule when putting it together: ASA/USA Dayton Metro qualifier, Cincy Doom Spring Madness, ASA States, Laser Nation, Canton open qualifier for ASA/USA 14U, Cleveland Metro ASA/USA qualifier, Stingrays, Marysville, GAPSS. Fortunately we've been able to play on Sundays (though we haven't won any championship) and the girls seem to be embracing the challenge. I'll let you know whether morale is still up after the Canton open qualifier, which if teams come from the west coast could be a real eye-opener for our girls.

PS: sorry for participating in the hijack.

What percentage of travel players are playing for the sole or main purpose of getting recruited into college? I wouldn't think that number would be very big. Am I wrong? I thought most play for fun (winning) with no real expectations or thoughts of getting recruited.

I think, this is just a wild guess, but I think that 75-80% of the girls in the older age groups have aspirations of playing in college. Again, no stat to show that but for a team fee of at least $500 and then all the travel expenses, I don't see too many girls do this just for fun.

Heck, if a DD knew how much money it actually cost for travel ball and she knew she wasn't going to play ball in college, I would bet the farm that she would ask you for the money and go on a shopping spree or road trip instead of playing ball.:D

funny.. we had our best week of practice this week all season... last night the girls were loose, having fun and executed great ...

I met with our parents and we decided to play out the tough schedule and not go to Nationals this year, but instead, stay local and play in our end of July tourney. We have already accomplished our goals for this season in terms of player development and team growth ... we are going to finish what we started and then set out on a path to a strong 2nd year 12u season in 2011.

I have to second you on this Bill. The herd sure does thin out when you get to the higher levels. The girls that continue to play past there 16th b-day, are in it to reach the next level.

I was looking from the 10, 12 and now first year at 14u level. It's more for fun. I would have thought that at least 50% or around that of older girls were in for fun. $500 of mommy and daddy's money is not that much (to them). Not being around the older girls I have no clue. I guess cars and boys must take away the ones in it for fun.

All kidding aside you have to consider that a lot of what goes on here goes to recruiting. We want good turn out at our try-outs!

Most 10U parents don't know much about the established travel programs. If they are doing research on OFC for teams to try out for, it would be a good place to identify teams with a track record of winning. Most winning teams are well coached and a good place for kids to learn about and improve their game. Explains why maybe you don't see it so much at the older ages as by then the parents have been through enough seasons to know what programs are a fit for their kids and the coaches also know that.

I also don't see anything wrong with coaches who are proud of their kids. Hopefully no one was offended by my joking with Stingrays 10U.
