Clarification on number of players on travel clubs

I am sure this has been answered before but I cant seem to figure out for sure what the rules are on number of players from the same school on a travel club. Every person I ask has a different response. I have also heard that has changed for next year but cant seem to find that either. If anyone can answer this would love to put the question to bed. Also is there a period outside of season the whole team can play together? I have heard high school teams can play indoor etc. I am sure there are a lot of people that don't know so if anyone out there can lay out the whole thing I think would be helpful to many.

I always go right to the source and email Roxanne. rprice@ohsaa.org That way I have it in writing. She usually gets back to me within a day or so.

I've always been led to believe that it's "not more than 4". Though I haven't been put in the situation that would cause me to seek out the hard facts of the matter, as we've generally been made up of 3 or less from any given school district.

4.2) A member of an interscholastic softball squad (any student who has played in a scrimmage, preview or regular
season/tournament game as a substitute or starter) sponsored by the Board of Education or other governing board
may participate in non-interscholastic softball prior to and after the school season under the following conditions:
4.21) The number of interscholastic softball players from the same school on a non-interscholastic squad is limited
to four on the roster of that non-interscholastic squad. A roster is defined as all the members of the entire
squad on that non-interscholastic squad.
Note: Graduating seniors who are participating on a non-interscholastic softball squad after their final
interscholastic contest of the season in the sport of softball are exempt from this limitation.
4.22) There is no limit on the number of softball squad members from the same school participating on the same
squad during the period beginning Friday prior to Memorial Day weekend (May 24, 2013)-July 31, 2013
provided the players have concluded their school season.
4.23) A player may continue to play with a non-interscholastic squad in a national qualifying tournament in excess of
the four player limitation after July 31 until the squad is eliminated but no later than Labor Day.
4.24) Non-interscholastic participation includes tryouts, training, practice and competition.
4.3) A student may not play in a non-interscholastic softball contest, game or scrimmage, while a member of the school
softball squad, until the student’s school team has completed its schedule. This includes tournaments when
applicable.

People usually quit reading after the second one (4.21)

5/24/13 through 7/31/13 is your typical Tournament Season, people.

Lou is right that those dates do cover the typical tourney season ... however, what that also means is that more than 4 girls from the same school system can not play or practice together the rest of the year, with the exception of school ball itself (starting end of February) and playing indoor ball from November through January.

So to make sure I got this right - from 5/24 to July 31 you could have unlimited players from the same school participate on the same club. Outside of that period no more than 4 from the same school can participate on the same club for anything?

Let's pick this apart even further...

OHSAA states, somewhere, that the High School season goes from tryouts until the school's last game that spring.
Until cuts are made the following February, who can define the roster for the upcoming season? I'm no attorney, but that appears to be open to interpretation...

I am sure that all of us are aware of the teams that have had more than four.

I know a couple of years ago, there was a team from NEO that had 13 players on the team and only was was from a different school. All were high school and the team had a really nice website with all this information posted. I am unaware of any coach, any player or the school of ever having gotten in trouble.

I am not sure it's that big of a deal.

ThatGuy ... yeah, that's basically right. Again, more than 4 can play indoor winter ball together. There are other rules that come into play about how much high school coaches are allowed to coach them, but there are other threads right now about that area.

Louuuu and Woolfman ... it is a big deal ... again, it's all about understanding the rules as have been outlined above. If it's only occurring in the timeframe above, then it's OK, but outside of that timeframe risks the eligibility of the athletes, their coaches, and their schools. Some schools have got nailed with it, and I am certain that others have got away with it, but let's not misinform people as to the rules or mislead them that it's OK to break them ...

I thought a lot of this has to do with when a school's coaching staff was also involved with a travel team (i.e. does the travel contact count towards the schools 10).

I think we noticed 4-5 'school' teams this summer at U16 that were playing together without 'involvement' form their school coaching staff. If the kids/parents are motived enough to make this work and the school coaches are 'hands off' why would OHSAA tie their hands?

If anyone does follow up with OHSAA (as Monster suggested) then please cut/paste back tho this thread.
