I thought you were older than that Quaker after seeing the picture of you in a model A at your 5th grade graduation. But then again you and the girl next to you were the only two with a full mustach

Just kidding

Don't make any older than I am already. Now, where's my cane ? I gotta go to the bathroom.

DD is soon to be 16. Hasn't pushed too hard to get her temps yet. She does remind me that she loves the Jeep Liberty. I tell her that I love private jets, but the likelihood of my ever having one is rather slim.

First car was a black '63 Chevy Impala with red interior and chrome reverse wheels and a 327 engine. It was the age of Aquarius.

Mine get cars so I don't have to drive them around anymore. They do and will pay their gas, maint and insurance. That was the deal I had as a kid. In 73 I got a 70 Camaro SS. I put some money down but pop paid the bulk. Mine don't get it that good. lol

Forgot to mention...I paid the whole tab to buy that '63 Chevy and paid for the insurance and gas. Paper route until age 16, then washed dishes at Frisch's for 15 months, then bagged groceries at Kroger. My family was poor.

My dd will definitely get a (used) car! Straight A student, works hard, and is responsible. She turns 16 in July and that will be her present. She will have to pay gas and insurance. My 13 yr old dd will probably get one also at 16 if she keeps up her great grades and hard work.

Of course she does.
A beautifull blue, partially rusted 1991 Honda Accord
Heck it only has about 150,00 miles on it
So it should be about half way through the break in period

DD is 17. She gets good grades & has a job. She pays for her own gas & insurance, but I bought the car. She has a 98 Jetta with about 115,000 miles that we were super lucky to get for only $1800. It's a bargin considering her dad & I aren't always able to adjust our work schedules to get her & her 2 younger sisters to everything and her travel team practices are about 2 hours from where we live.

I'm talking 1974-76 era.... the beer drinking clan was elsewhere. Usually down along the creek bank of Todds Fork at Number #8 train trussle on the back side of Clarksville.... where you could jump off the train bridge into the creek below. Now, there has indeed been some parties there in the late 60's - early 70's. Bunch of kids from every town in the surrounding area use to come swim there.

I graduated in the late 80's but i do know what bridge your talking about. It backs up to a girls scout camp and a 200 acre farm on George rd. And the creek is Cowans Creek. LOL

No Cowans Creek runs into Todds Fork. Cowans Creek runs out of Cowan Lake and down Cowans Creek Rd. and under Clarksville Rd and into Todds Fork at Bridge #10. Great fishing hole by the way. Big fish there. You can walk to it off Clarksville Road.

Number #8 is on the backside of Clarksville at the old Valley Steel pipe plant. The guys at the plant use to go down and trench out the backside of the abutment at the train tressle so the jumping in part of the creek would be .... a) deep and b) clear of debris.

Your location is right though. It did back up to the Girls Scout Camp. Wilmington HS band use to use the camp for a week in the summer for band camp. Of course, us Clinton-Massie boys and girls would go up about midnight and disturb their sleep with M-80's almost every night..LOL Ever hear about 25 to 35 M-80's go off at the same time ? LOL You should of heard the screams coming from their cabins... especially if it was their first year at band camp.

Gosh, them was the good ole days...

Our oldest DDs received a Dodge Shadow at 16 and upon graduation from College we got her a Jeep Liberty (Title still in our name).
Our 15 year old will get my wifes ride when she hits 16 and the wife will get something else.
My wife and I feel the kids job is to excel at school and with their extracurricular activities they need to be able to drive.
Like most parents we continue to stress high expectations for both. We did limit driving privileges while in HS to school related activities with the occasional exception on the weekend.
We still pay the insurance for the oldest and this helps her and her new husband as they start out in their new life. Next year they get "cut loose" and we will give them the Jeep to do what they wish.
Hopefully, they continue on the path they have been on and the youngest follows in her big sisters footsteps.

My first ride 1970 Galaxy 5oo 351CI.
I picked it up for $200 "beat the **** out of it" for two years and then sold it for $250.
Flat black paint hid the cardboard and duct tape body work but; the Pyramid 8 way speakers was the eye candy that closed the deal.

I worked at IGA at the time so cardboard and duct tape was within my budget for the body work. I did use Kentucky Chrome paint to hide the rust on the bumper;&

When our oldest turned 16 a couple years ago, we bought a used car so she could get a parking permit and drive back and forth for her vocational program. After grauation, she got a job and bought her own car so now #2 dd inherited the used car. We pay gas and insurance while they are in high school as long as they get good grades (their job) and are involved in activities.

DD does not have her DL yet, she will not be getting her own car ...man this is scary stuff !
First car was a 64 corvair, I had it a month and pulled the engine, split the block and installed a 3/4 grind cam; that along with dual exhaust and glass pack mufflers.
I had wanted to put a 4barrel holley on it, but I found myself having to replace the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing, caused by me doing burnouts...then tires!!!
Went from that to a 60 chevy impala, yeah the one with wings; as a matter of fact it held the road like a prehistoric bird in flight, at least until you hit 100mph. I better stop now !!! FR

I had kept my Dad's old 1999 minivan as a spare car when he died. It has 167K mile on it. I let my dd use it; it really helps that she can drive herself and her freshman brother to school. As long as she keeps grades up, is responsible, and stays involved in a lot of activities I will pay the gas and insurance.

Factory Rat : My friend had an 1963 or 64 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 with something ("Hydro" Maybe or "Dyna") Glide transmission.. The true Batmobile 4 door...LOL.. Bought it off the Basketball ball coach that sold cars in the summer at a dealership for $100.00. Some older couple traded it in on a new car in 1975. Had 42,000 miles on it and was immaculate.

Sold it to his brother when he got another car... brother has kept it all these years.. worth a bundle now...

Still have 4yrs to go before dd's 16. My first car was an 85 Horizon. Man was she sweet.
Had my permit at the time, and ask if I could drive it to school. It was dad's car at the time. After school a couple buddies wanted a ride home. I knew i shouldn't...but I did. Was hit by a 18 wheeler. Dad worked out of state and was home on a 4 day weekend. He had to buy a new car to get back to work. He ended up getting the Horizon fixed up and it became mine. Man, were we lucky!

Who knows what the baby dd is going to get when she gets to driving age, that's (gulp!) three years away. Officially, for my first car, my parents let me drive a VERY used pontiac station wagon, it must have been a '62 or '63 when I started driving in 1970. But the best thing was for my senior year in HS. Totally without me knowing what was going on, my dad got a black with silver chrome '65 Mustang 3 speed for me to have, all my own. I wish he was still with us, so I could hug him still for it. Oh, man, it was great.

My DD is 13; But when we bought our son a brand new car in 2008. I feel that was a mistake, because of the little door dings, and just being a new driver. When it is time for my DD I will buy her one, but not new; I learned my lesson. I am a fanatic about keeping a car clean inside and out. My son must of got his way from my wife, because they (to me) are pretty dirty most of the time. I will not drive them, because it will just tick me off. On the other hand I feel my DD wll be like me; probably because she hears me complain about it and the reasons why. I have been fortunate that the "recession" has not affected me.
