She'll own one soon.

Over Spring break, she and a friend are taking the Mega Bus to Chicago, then on to Minneapolis where one of my sisters lives. She's going to take possession of a Saturn in very nice condition. She just doesn't even realize what a lucky duck she is, lol.

Finch, here's some history of 1969 chevelle engines, fr
There were four 396 engine options offered in 1969. (#1) The base 396 engine was rated at 325 HP for the basic SS package (in '69). This was also teamed up with the 3 speed transmission as standard issue, the four speed and automatic were an option. (#2) The 350 HP version was an option, as well as the (#3) 375 HP (Known as the L78).
The original '69 brochure for the Chevelle did not list the L78, but the El Camino brochure did. If you had a knowledgeable sales person, he would have been able to order the L78 engine for you in a 1969 Chevelle SS. The other (4th) option was the L78 with Aluminum Heads. This was the rarest option. The HP was not rated higher, but the weight was a considerable improvement over the cast iron heads. Both versions of the heads on the L78 were big rect port heads and both the 350 HP and two 375 HP versions had an aluminum intake, which the 325 HP version did not come with. the 325 HP version and 350 HP versions had the smaller oval port heads as well. Later in the 1969 production year the bore of the 396 changed to a 402, however, the car was still called an SS 396, then the 454 arrived in 1970. All SS 396 Chevelles were 402 CI in 1970 with the SS 454 as an option.

You sure you could get a 69 SS 396 Chevelle with a 3 speed? I thought the SS package included the 4 speed. A dealer in Chicago, Nickey Chevrolet offered special SS packages that I believe included the L78.

factory rat, I am going to ask the parent which one he has; I am curious. I think I remember him mentioning the aluminum heads? and I am almost positive about the L78. He hasn't driven it in about three years, mentioned a couple times about selling it for college for his two kids. His wife pass away about sx years ago, and I believe its being busy (single father) not letting him have the time to go do a lot of things.

I think that I'll get my DD a Harley, of coarse she won't be driving for another year, but
someone at work is selling one cheap. She could start familiarizing herself with it by learning how to wax it, then move on from there. FR

One of the deciding factors on her getting a car was set-up back when she was 11-12......Responsibility. We told her that if she was responsible and made good decisions then when the time came, we would work on getting her own car, if we could afford it and taking into account what the current transportation requirements are.

She did really well (knock on wood) with her decisions and responsibilities and with mom and dad's job requirements and her transportation requirements, we got her a car when she got her driver's license. There were still plenty of controls that she initially, and some still today, had to negotiate but she has done really well.

It was not a new car but one in good enough shape to get her at least 4-5 years worth of use out of (hopefully till she gets through college).

She definately knew that a car is not a right, but an earned priviledge that can be yanked when control measures are not followed. She pays for her own gas (which means she has to have an income) and she contributes to the insurance bill.

Pretty much what our thinking was. We bought a reasonable car for her (our choice) in high school, when she got a job. The plan was a safe, reliable car that would last her through college - which it has. We do the major upkeep, which has just been a set of new tires. Responsibility and GRADES. Her job provided her gas and spending money - which taught her the value of a buck. As a college senior, she's now pretty frugal with her own cash. She'll "inherit" the car when she graduates, and then it's up to her to keep it, trade it or whatever.

DropBallPrincess, you're a smart girl: (I don't want a harley, sorry to burst your bubble)

Remember -The only difference between a Hoover and a Harley is the "function of the dirt bag"........

:lmao:

We gave each of my 3 kids a car when they turned 16. Nothing great, son got a Chrysler Imperial (hand me down), older daughter got a Buick Century (bought from a 93 year old neighbor). Funny story there. The neighbors son had put her into a retirement home and the car was left in her garage at her home while they were deciding what they were going to do about her house. The son went back to check on the house. The car looked like it was up too far in the garge. He looked at the odometer and there was 400 miles on it from when it was inspected three months earlier? He then found out 93 year old mom was having Access pick her up at the retirement home, take her to her house and then she would go out cruising, do what she wanted, and then go home and call Access to take her back to the retirement home! My youngest daughter just got a Dodge Intrepid (bought from my mechanic). My first car, sorry to say was a 1974 Nova, I wanted to buy a 196? Lincoln with gangster doors, but my Dad insisted I buy the Nova because the money was the same and the Nova only had 16,000 miles on it. Needless to say I thought the Lincoln was way cooler.

My dd will definitely get a (used) car! Straight A student, works hard, and is responsible. She turns 16 in July and that will be her present. She will have to pay gas and insurance.

Len

Same with my kid. Only she turns 16 in June and we already got her the car. A 95 cavalier that looks like an 03. A nice little beaut that the ex's parents picked up in North Carolina for a song.
