Got a couple years before we have to make that decision - Son is 14, DD is 13. They probably will get their own cars as long as we can afford it - NOT new ones though. DD says she wants a VW bug and have it painted like a softball. My first car - handed down from Grandma - 69 Nova.

Ziggywoman, I had a 1970 nova from grandma & gramps, 2 door, 3 speed, with rally wheels. I wish I still had that one, but do have gramps shop manual with his notes that came with the car. fr

Mine always had a tail light out (it would fall out into the trunK) and went through selinoids like crazy - carried a screw driver with me so I could start it by crossing the screw driver across the bolts on the starter LOL

Hey, my Toyota minivan is 10 years old and even the power sliding door still works. My first car was a 1980 Chevy Monza that I bought myself after high school graduation because "I liked the color." My husband (boyfriend back then) hated it because he always had to fix it for me. He never liked Vegas (my dad's used cars) or the Monza.

My dd doesn't have her own car, but she pretty much has full access to our 2002 Chevy Cavalier for school, practice, and running her younger brothers (she has 3) to practice, etc... We pay the insurance, she pays for gas, but bottomline, it is our car and we get first priority if we need it. Typically, hubby and I settle for the mini-van that she wouldn't be caught dead in. LOL There have been times that my hubsand and I have purposely taken the Chevy so that she would have to drive the minivan...we have to get our laughs somehow. Her younger brother has his temps now, and we've inherited a 1991 Honda Accord, (lots of dings, rust, but runs like a top), but he is thrilled to have access to it when he finally gets his license. Truth is, most of her friends have cars newer than any of ours....just surprises me, especially in this economy.

My first ride...a 1970, army green, Dodge Coronet... we nicknamed it The Tank...it took my friends and me everywhere, and I didn't give a **** what it looked like, cause at least I had a car!

Both DDs have their own cars--both cars are 2001--old but still somewhat dependable. They are both in college now, but they shared a car in high school. Oldest daughter now needs her car for clinicals in college. Youngest doesn't really need one since she is 45 minutes from us, but we already had the car.

Both are very responsible.

My dd just turned 14. She plans on getting a car when she turns 16. She is on an incentive based program. First of all, she has to have a job. Secondly, she has to have some money saved, and she is now asking me to get her a savings account. This is where the incentive based program starts:

1) GPA <3.5. She must pay for both insurance and car payment (if she has one)

2) 3.5-3.90. I pay for either insurance or car payment (which ever is cheapest)

3) >3.5. I pay for it all. You all call me crazy, but that money she will be saving will go to college. Once she turns 18, she pays for it all.

4) Below 3.2 lose license, car keys, and gas will be siffoned out.

My first car, 1976 Ford Granada. I took my friends everywhere, had that system, and drove it like a tank, literally.

Reading what cars that you (parents) started out with. My first car ws a '71 Lemans sport. I took auto body/auto mechanics in school; what I would do is buy a car fix it up and make some money, buy something better and do it all over again. I must have had 15 cars before I was 19. I had a '69 chevelle, '67 cougar, a bunch of "winter cars". Man if we still had some of the cars we would probably get a lot of money for them if they were in good shape. I was and still am a big car fanatic. I droll over Barrett Jackson Auto show. don't have any of those cars now, Children cost a ton of money and are worth every penny!!!

The one I had I bought in 1984, it had 31000 original miles on it. It was my girlfriends grand parents (both passed away). It was only a 307, green with green interior four door. I have a parent on my team who has a '69 chevelle SS with about 30000 on it. He had it for at least 30 years. Has it in storage and has not brought it out. He was telling me it has some special motor (original) in it, I cant remeber but only a few of them were made with this motor?? Any how its worth over 100K now from what I understand. I was always told cars are your worst investment. A new Chevelle in 1969 like that was about $4500??......nice return on that $4500.

Oldest used my Mitsubishi Lancer Rally OZ '04 (manual) to get back and forth from school. When she turned 18 we put into her name as part of her High School Graduation and 18th birthday present.

Youngest, lol I wrecked the Malibu she was driving to school, replaced it with a "granny" Buick Century '96 so she can get back and forth to school. We will put it in her name when she turns 18 as well.

Never intended to give them cars, but with no buses for high school, you have to have a way to get them around to all their activities.

I bought all three of my daughters used cars when they turned 16. Most expensive one $800. They pay their own insurance which is around $60 a month. The reason behind this, there is a program thru State Farm called the Steer Clear program. They get a huge discount for going thru the program, however they lose the discount if they get any tickets or accidents. Big incentive to obey the speed limit and pay attention. They also get a discount for good grades.
Each of these cars ran very well for the 2 years they are in hs. Oldest bought her own when she graduated and 2nd oldest is getting ready to graduate now. Just bought the youngest for $600 it is a 1991 dodge shadow convertible. We had to replace the head on it and that is it. Now runs like a dream and dd has her own car.
Those that think this is too much, wait till they start driving and can run those pesky errands you don't want to or having to wait around for a 2 hour practice when it is too far to drive back home.

I'm on a fact finding mission.

My offspring doesn't fully grasp the meaning of "Recession". In addition to that, she seems to be confusing the terms "Right" and "Privilege". I'm blaming the entire scenario on her vocabulary teacher at school, while she's leaning toward Poor Parenting.

And, is it true that "all my friends have their own car"? Or is that something that varies between school districts?

So please provide input: Does Your Daughter Have Her Own Car?

If so, is it New, Used, Inherited from Grandma, Shared among siblings, John Deere, etc...

My daughter isn't old enough yet but I do have a son that is 17. He is using an older vehicle of mine that I decided to keep for him to use. It is a convenience to ME that he has it and only drives to school on the days he has a practice or other after-school need.

It is a 1998 Grand Am that squeals when it runs and has a huge dent in the passenger side door.

On the recession thing..... he would have the even if I made three times what I make now. It is all he needs with the fact that kids in general are prone to bump and ding everything they go by.

Though I do explain so he has perspective, I don't have to convince him. If he were to bitch about it then he would have nothing. I'm the parent.

Finch, here's some history of 1969 chevelle engines, fr
There were four 396 engine options offered in 1969. (#1) The base 396 engine was rated at 325 HP for the basic SS package (in '69). This was also teamed up with the 3 speed transmission as standard issue, the four speed and automatic were an option. (#2) The 350 HP version was an option, as well as the (#3) 375 HP (Known as the L78).
The original '69 brochure for the Chevelle did not list the L78, but the El Camino brochure did. If you had a knowledgeable sales person, he would have been able to order the L78 engine for you in a 1969 Chevelle SS. The other (4th) option was the L78 with Aluminum Heads. This was the rarest option. The HP was not rated higher, but the weight was a considerable improvement over the cast iron heads. Both versions of the heads on the L78 were big rect port heads and both the 350 HP and two 375 HP versions had an aluminum intake, which the 325 HP version did not come with. the 325 HP version and 350 HP versions had the smaller oval port heads as well. Later in the 1969 production year the bore of the 396 changed to a 402, however, the car was still called an SS 396, then the 454 arrived in 1970. All SS 396 Chevelles were 402 CI in 1970 with the SS 454 as an option.
