earned or unearned

Need a little help.

#1 - 1 out - No one on base. Ball hit to 1st baseman. Rather than stepping on the bag she tags the hitter. Ball pops out of glove. Hitter safe. E-3. Next batter singles to right field. Ball goes between right fielders legs and rolls to the fence. Girl on 1st and hitter score. Single E-9. Next batter 4 to 3 for 2nd out. Next batter swing 3rd strike catcher misses ball hitter to first. Last batter 1 to 3. Third out. How many earned runs?

#2 - 2 outs - No one on. Single to left field. Ball goes between outfielders legs, rolls to fence. Hitter scores. Single E-7. Next batter single to right. Next batter single to center fielder ball goes between fielders legs rolls to fence. Runner on 1st and hitter score. Next batter E-6 overthrow. Last batter 1 to 3. Third out. How many earned runs?

Do not know if it makes a difference but each of the hits to our outfielders were clearly singles. Outfielders did not have to move. The balls were hit to them, just went between their legs.

#1 - no earned runs - first runner because got on by error - second girl should have been at first with one out (first batter), and would not have scored without the error.

#2 - probably one earned run - without all the errors, one run probably would have scored with the 3 singles.

Tell the outfielders to just lay down in front of the ball or something.

Agree with coachjwb. Not quite enough info to tell for sure in the second scenario, but very likely at least one earned run, but probably not two.

Is it an error if it rolls between their legs and they didn't touch it?
kinda like if its hit right to them but they ran in and it went right over
their head. i thought you had to touch it for it to be an error?

If the play clearly should have been made, then it is an error. Touching the ball does not matter.

scenario 1--all unearned

scenario 2--one, for potential runs scored on hits....

errors are sometimes a judgement call...if you think a player can make the play under normal circumstances, but it rolls through the legs instead, i would error it....if they were going after the ball and tried to slide and catch, ball skirts under and through, it;s probably a double/triple...

I think you need to worry less about earned / unearned and worry more about your outfield :-?

Ouch, was that a shot at Scott?

Who's Scott? Just a little sarcasm...Seems every play started off with ".....ball went between her legs and rolls to the fence...." Either get a fielder or closer fences. ;)

Scott,
if I was keeping score you'd probably be saying huh???? I'd be a BAST#$@$@d ......

scenario 1- Unearned

scenario 2- 1 run earned, unless in my mind it was a rare speed demon on second and how far it was hit for the single to begin with.

:)

Balls through the legs that allow runners to advance are basically always errors, touched or not. Fly balls that are not touched are usually not errors ... they can be attributed to the sun or wind or something I guess.

Thanks for all your input. That is the way I had it scored.

TheRinger - When it's 2:00 A.M. and you keep looking at the books and it does not change, there is very little you can do about your outfielders. Now, at practice today, that's a different story. The outfielders are in a little better shape today ::)

Were those outfield hits bloop flies (Texas Leaguers) that dropped in, or hard shot grounders through the infield gaps? If they were bloop flies falling into no-man's-land, I would move those outfielders in a fair amount until the other team can prove to me they have enough hitting strength to blast it over their heads. Adjustments are key, but if that many balls rolled between their legs... oh boy!

Sammy - They were ground balls that went between the SS and 3rd basemen, and then thru the outfielders legs. On a positive not, the extra conditioning yesterday must have paid off. No errors anywhere. 1st time in a long time.

softballisfun - drank a 6 pack of coke, swallowed a pack of sunflower seed and broke the bill of my hat. Not bad for the first game ;D

Listen people, you don't need 22 pages to score correctly. It's rather simple.

Per statman's scoring guide:

On Defense
Score a hit if:
  • Someone else's kid is pitching
  • Your kid attempted to field ball
Score an error if:
  • Your kid is pitching
  • Someone else's kid attempted to field the ball

On Offense
Score a hit if: Your kid was batting
Score an error if: Someone else's kid was batting
