earned or unearned

Don't think that these girls do not know the importance of the stats. I am getting beaten up by the girls as to why their at bat was a FC and not a hit, or why I scored it an error instead of a hit. They can come up with some pretty good arguments as to why they think it should be a hit.

On the much lighter side.....There is no monetary reason at all that I cannot score it as a hit ;D. Statman and I have to earn concession stand money somehow. How do you think our DDs can offord those expensive bats?

I do understand that we need to keep stats, especially at an older age we colleges are looking, etc. But as a coach, do you really need these, don't people know what there team does? I'm not trying to be smart, I keep or try to keep stats, but I know what the girls on our team are able to do, I don't need a book to tell me or determine the batting line up. Does anyone think we put to much importance on stats? When our coach brings them out, it's like parents can't wait to see. I know what my DD does. I don't know, it's just weird to me, at a 12-U level.

Stats can be an insurance policy for the "Why isn't my kid playing parent." Well, because she is batting .195 with 46 K's. Of course the parent's scorebook NEVER EVER matches the "official" book. I think statman's guide is used way more than we like to admit.

At 10u, we made up a "put the ball in play" stat that the coaches used for setting the batting order. At 10u, if you put the ball in play, you have a 50% chance that something good will happen for you.

As Ringer stated above, stats are good when discussing issues with parents. We even track the amount of innings played. It settles a lot of disagreements real quick.

wvan,

i've added some little tidbits to my ever growing excel program (thanks to jac-mac and an old stingray parent) like contact percentage, left vs right hit spread chart....this gives coach some needed feedback on who is producing, who will produce and who is struggling....you cant do everything by what the book tells you, but it does give some freedom to make choices in regards to those tough decisions that involve people and their kids...

i mean, if the #'s were superfulous, then ESPN wouldn't scroll them at the bottom of the screen, and USA today wouldn't publish avg's and box scores...

but, flashes10, you still, as a coach, have to make judgement calls based on past history (you think pujols is going to be benched if he goes on a 2-30 run? maybe a day off, but the dude is gonna play), what you need at that position (a number 2 hitter may have a low avg, but bunts like crazy and moves runners), parent bribes and politics. okay, the last 2 were in jest, but you get my drift...i'm glad i only take score, coaches get no credit unless they are named Candrea

My point exactly, as a coach you know what your player do. And I believe my DD's coach does exactly that, and yes stats are important, not denying that at all, but they are not the final say in who plays and where.

flashes,

we get into this all the time in school....Randy McCrook didn't pass OAT, Cindy McSoonPreggers doesn't have this grade...yadda yadda....that's the fun of coaching and teaching...working with that human element enought to manipulate them for what they can be successful with...Derek McADHD likes computers, there's your incentive....Julie McSpecialEd can't read, she gets headphones and books on tape...either way, they learn, they move on, they function...

in coaching, you can take that contact person and move them around the lineup (second?) that flyball hitter of yours? drop her into the 5/6 spot...girl has speed, leadoff, maybe even ninth....my dad and i kept everystat imaginable when i was a lowly coaches assistant for football/basketball boys junior high in Texas...most of the time, numbers gave us that little edge to make some tweaks....of course, you win a district title, you're a guru, lose enough, and everyone comes calling, stats or no stats

I think you need to worry less about earned / unearned and worry more about your outfield :-?
