How far are you willing to go?

Now that we're in the middle of try-outs, I am just wondering how far people travel to be on the teams that they've chosen. That's always been a curiosity of mine, because there are a lot of teams out there who seem like great organizations, or that my DD has an expressed an interest in, but I'm just not ready to travel that far for softball. Do teams with girls from all over practice? If so, where? Just curious how other families handle this situation. Thanks!

all depends on what your expectations are for the team she will be playing on. I'm in portsmouth oh. No team within 2 hrs has the expectation of competing at ASA nats' , so it off to columbus and cinci and beyond for tryouts . about an hour 45 min any direction for me. teams vary on practice time required , some say "make it when you can" some once a week mandatory, lot depends on the age group (younger-more practice time) and just how studly the kid is, she's a # 1 arm that practice schedule gets real flexable LOL MD

We traveled 45 mins last year, wan't that bad, but sometimes 3 times a week does take its toll. We are fortunate for this year, a great organization that is only 10 mins from home.

We traveled about 35 minutes two seasons ago, 15 min. last year and hopefully only 8 mins. down the road this season. We got really lucky finding a team so close to home that dd really wants to play for. We would have considered an hour to an hour in half drive for the right fit but we found it really close this year. Wish we had found them sooner.:)

Last year DD's team disbanded in October. DD was offered two spots, one 45 minutes away, one two hours away. DD loved the coach, the girls and the plans for the team, so we traveled two hours. The team makes all the difference if you can do the drive. Coach was lenient on weekday practice attendance.

Found a new team this year after last years team moved up an age group. Only traveling an hour and 15 this year. Once again there were closer offers, but you may have to drive to get what you want.

We have never traveled less than an hour for one of our daughters. Once when we relocated to the city my daughter's team was from, she ended on a team two hours away (with practices during the week and games on the weekends in the fall) the following summer.

Youngest was the same way, but she was usually an hour to an hour and a half away.

Don't regret it at all. Right team with the right fit is worth the travel. Shoot we traveled all over during the summer anyway.

We travel about 15-20 min. for our team. Not far and great organization.

Farthest we ever had to travel was 30 minutes. Which still isn't bad.

We have traveled over an hour for a team that dd played on, and for the last two years its been about 50 min not bad until winter when roads are not the best

My dd will be playing 11U this year...we have limited tryouts to teams with practices no more than 1 1/2 hours away given that during the school year, it would be difficult to the practices on time if they were any further.

I think with the way things are economicly most players will find somewhere "close" to home and a team that practices 2 days a week. I would think if you add in traveling to tourneys and all it would get hard. In SWO we are fortunate to live where we do...we are right in between cinci and dayton takes about 35 min to get to each. We told DD that was her limit for practices so she has pretty much a 35 mile radius.... not to bad for us ALOT of good teams around

This is our first year to travel ball and this was my question. We went to several tryouts some close some further away and in the end we decided on the team that best fit us and that our dd fit. There was just a chemistry we didnt feel at other tryouts, so in the end we chose the team that jelled. So looks like we have a nice 2 hour drive once a week. We will use this time to talk and communicate as a family!

We have been traveling to different teams each year, and two out of 3 were about 35 minutes. This year she landed on a great team in a great organization that is about 40 minutes away. But I think their practices might be closer. It depends on where all the girls hail from. We shall see.

We will travel 2 hrs for practice, but it will be on Sundays during the fall and winter. Last year it was 1.25 hrs 1 or 2 times a week. We travel 1hr for pitching coach, 45min for hitting coach and 45min for fitness coach. Once season begins doesn't really matter because you're gone every weekend, unless your team stays more local.

We spent the last two seasons with a team that we had to travel up to 50 some miles for. Some times practice was 3 times a week. One other family traveled twice what we did. It was well worth it as the instruction was outstanding and she developed very well with them. We had to move this year and found a team as great but a little less then half the distance. We count our blessings as we would go two/three times the distance for what this coach offers. You will go as far as it worth I guess.

This year our team was pretty much in our own back yards, but 2010 my DD will be playing for a team that is around 40-50 minutes away. I don't mind it at all, as long as I see an organization making efforts to help the girls reach their goals.

Mike/MustOH... you guys are no longer with Static?

My Dd played for Kavin, Static 12u Black, for 2 years but he is staying at 12u next year, for his 3rd year, so we had to move. Would have preferred to stay with him as he develops strong players. We choose teams based on their coach as the primary concern and found another great coach at the OFC Heat96. He knows his stuff and is developing a strong team. My Dd played with his at 10u with the Doom.

Did you move your team to the Hawks. Great org!

Musty,

Thanks for the compliments!!! The girls should get all the credit for their development b/c without their hardwork nothing is possible.

I will miss Mandy tremendously. She is absolutely the best. I am very sadden not to be able to coach her but she has landed w/ a good team & coach which helps ease the pain a little on my heart. However, I will always see her as one of my own so I might still remind her of a few things...........LISTEN!!!! :)

Exactly 1 hour away. Not bad.

I still believe we hold the record for longest distance of 3 1/2 hours during the `08 season (norwalk to cincy) LOL!
