How many pitchers

Yes, please specify the age groups. :)
At 12U we had 3 and a backup, at 14U we have 3 and a backup. (plan on long sundays hopefully!);) Nationals is a whole new ball game!

Would like to look at the age group in question? As far as the number 3 not a good number. This site is great! Only 2nd post, love it!!!

3 is a good number. Whats important is to make sure that one or two of them can also contribute in another position / roll.

Sorry for the delay...with fall practice & tourneys I've been away for a while. I'm talking about 14U, but I don't think the age group matters. I think telling your pitchers they are #1, #2, or #3 is only going to lead to confusion. Even telling them they are starters or relief could lead to problems. I find it is better to discuss expectations than to label them. Seems to me that each parent has a different idea for the job of each label.

I agree with the labeling pitchers as 1, 2, & 3. I'm sure that any parent watching any game can tell which pitchers are the strongest, but in certain situations you may not want your fastest pitcher to pitch. Just depends on the team you are up against. You should have enough pitchers with different speeds and pitching styles so they can be played in different situations.

sad627, you said it!

I agree with your thoughts and have adjusted who I pitch (1,2,3) based upon the team we are facing, whether or not a "pitcher" needs to be challenged to nudge her work ethic or abilities, and the importance of the next game. Playing time is always a factor as well. Control, control, control.... then speed has always been where we've had lots of success, regardless of speed. Lots of talented teams have a very hard time with the slower speeds in my experience. Probably because as coaches we push them in the cages with higher speeds.

Lester you hit the nail on the head. My dd is "labeled" as the number 1 and her abilities show. But she also has a lot of movement on her ball. There are really good hitting teams out there that eat up a fast ball. She wouldn't be good in every situation and I really hate the label!!

Perfect! That is what I thought also! My DD is labeled #3 and I agree she isnt the best on our team, Needs more mound time. Inexperience shows sometimes. But she will get there! ;) Just hate the label thing!

Thanks!

probably a better way to describe them but the English language has it's issues as well. I know my DD is probably #6-7 in the line-up and I'm cool with that. If the "player" is cool with it or not... they have to begin to understand that hard work will get them a better situatuion if so desired. I see that on my job as well. My 2 cents...
