How often does the newspaper get it wrong?

Just thought this was curious. Browsing the online Columbus Dispatch today and read the following from the Thursday, May 21, 2009 Softball Roundup article
"Teays Valley 2, Grove City 1
Jenna Arnold had a two-out RBI double in the eighth inning to lift Teays Valley (24-5) over top-seeded Grove City (26-4), the Division I state runner-up a year ago.
Kristy Moore opened the eighth with a bunt single, moved to second on a walk and stole third."

Here's what I thought I saw
"Teays Valley 2, Grove City 1
Jenna Arnold had a two-out RBI double in the eighth inning to lift Teays Valley (24-5) over top-seeded Grove City (26-4), the Division I state runner-up a year ago.
Kristy Moore opened the eighth (actually there was already 2 outs when she came up to bat) hit the ball after with a bunt single (actually reached first on a throwing error) moved to second on a walk (actually moved to second because the overthrow went out of bounds) and stole third."

Maybe my memory is failing but this is what I thought I saw during the 8th inning of that game. In addition, are you considered a state-runner up if you're one of the final four, or is only the team that lost in the final, not semi-final the state runner-up? Not really sure. It's a shame one of these teams had to lose. Very exciting game. Good luck to Teays Valley, Hilliard Darby, and Pickerington Central in the Regionals.

It doesn't really matter what the newspaper guy saw often they are just there to get the story from some assit coach after the game. What matters is the final score. No matter how you shake it TV scored one more run then GC and they are moving on. GC had a great year and I hope that its not their last.

Yes, you're right, TV did score 1 more than GC. I just never realized how inaccurate the stats can be. I assumed if a reporter writes up a game, then they must have attended the game and taken notes, but that doesn't seem to be the case in this instance.

BTW, who supposed to report the scores, the home team or the winning team? I'm sure they're always discrepancies with errors recorded and win-loss records since most probably guess at the opposing team's records.

During the season the Home team is supposed to report the scores to the paper. In tournament play I'm not sure who is supposed to.

Well, I guess each area of the state reports differently. In SW OH, during the season, the winning team reports to the paper. In sectional tournament play, the home team reports to the paper and then when you advance to a neutral site, OHSAA (&/or their assigned site manager) reports to the paper.

The paper gets those things wrong quite a bit. Believe me, as a former Sports Editor and high school softball coach, I have a pretty good idea of how often basic facts are wrong.

In the Central District, winning team calls in scores for sectionals, but at districts, I'm trying to remember. I always called it in myself either way, but the Dispatch and the weeklies were normally there. I forget whose responsibility it is at districts to make sure the paper has the linescore.
