Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Is this normal?

Or I should ask, is this common? . . .high school pitchers don't bat? Is this a way for the coach to use more players when the roster has nearly double the girls than it takes to field a team?
I would imagine colleges are recruiting pitchers that can also hit. If the DD is working hard all winter on hitting, pitching, and fielding other positions for her travel team then she will lose the muscle memory during the school season. UGH!

I think it is common. There are many reasons for it. Maybe the HS only has one pitcher.

MOO, but not too many D1 pitchers hit.

I don't know about "normal", but's it's certainly not unusual.

If the pitcher can hit, put a bat in her hands... Coaches are more concerned with W's than playing time.

It's rare in College and NPF to see a pitcher bat, unless you've got a Jenny Finch on your team who excels at both.

When TBone was on JV she hit. Then as a Sophomore when she went to Varsity she didn't hit. Last year as a Junior was the first time she hit for Varsity. We had 3 pitchers. I was told by everyone this was uncommon and weird because pretty much every team we played batted their pitcher. We respected our coaches decision and I just told my daughter to keep at it and "be ready" for when you get the chance. That's really all you can do.

And if I'm being honest (and not one of THOSE pitcher's moms, haha), until last season hitting was TBone's weakest point...I think it made her stronger and pushed her because she wanted a spot on that batting roster.

Most colleges do not have pitchers who hit. If you were a college coach would you want to risk your job by allowing your #1 pitcher to hurt herself running the bases?

After watching a couple seasons of college softball I have seen very few pitchers used in the lineup to hit. It makes sense if you take cshilt's logic a step further, all it takes is one pitch to the wrist or ??? to cause a team to have to go without a valuable resource. Especially in HS where most teams have one top pitcher and the lucky HS's have a good back up. In college most teams have a roster full of hitters and only 3 to 4 pitchers.

I agree with some of the others, if she deserves to hit, she will hit. If not, we will have someone hit for her.

If she is a hitter she will hit...otherwise I get other girls in the game and save my pitcher.
