Besides drinking lots of water and using cold/wet towels inthe dugout, does anyone have good advice on keeping a catcher cooled off? Under armor? Socks? Anything? After this weekend, we could use some advice.

THANKS!! ;)

When it is really hot, we have had umps who allow our catcher to call time and get a drink or towel off. If they don't suggest this, I would ask if it is ok.

I say have the umps face the other way when they give out hot air calls! ;D

As stated Ice rags, water, water, water. Don't pour water on them it makes it worse... If you are at fields with no roofs on dugouts, a 20.00 tarp and bungees always helps. Have them sit and not cheer to much so not to expend wasted energy.

We doused our girls with ice water between innings this weekend. With the 20 mph wind in toledo the girls said it made them cooler. Who knows. I have looked into a misting system but its quite expensive. Lowering the core temp is what we're after. Having 2 strong catchers makes a big difference to. Lots of shade from a pop up sun shade , ice rags and ice cold water seemed to do the trick for us. ;)

putting the cold towels, etc. under their arms, helps reduce the core temp.

My daughter has liked to take a bandana (we kept a couple in a cooler) soak it in ice water and make a do-rag out of it to wear under her helmet. It helps some. Luckily we were off this weekend.

This is called Florida Water

mix water and rubbing alcohol in a zip-lock bag and chill it in the freezer, it doesn't freeze hard,it just gets super-cold.

soak handkerchief or bandana in it and tie around the neck.

Very affective and inexpensive, but you have to come up with something that keeps it away from the drinking water and food etc.

How about a couple batter operated fans for the team. Then all your players are ready foe those 3-5 game days

Their is some form of bandana/headgear that gets put in the freezer. There is a college pitcher that wears one? Don't recall the team though.

We used a spray bottle of ice water at Toledo this weekend. It was one designed to mist house plants.

I thing softbldad's idea may be the best. ?My other facorite is a good backup catcher to share time or be able to sub in when game is well in hand. ;)

Just keep her off her feet as much as possible when she is not in the game. ?(Between games, too. ?Have her take the sliding shorts and socks off) My DD loves to run the bases but?Coaches didn't permit her to run for herself all day until the 6th inning in the championship game. ?Remember, its not the running, its the standing around on the bases in the heat and sun waiting for the next hit, etc.

This may be stating the obvious but be sure they take their gear off in the dugout.

I go to many tournements and see many of the younger catchers not being reminded to take off all gear.

The cold towells under tha arms and around the back of the neck.

sftbldad: "A pitcher with good control" ?Best answer I've heard lately!!! ?That's music to a catching coaches ears.

Has anyone ever used the cooling vests that are on the market? I've often wondered if the really work as well as they say.

We have been using the gel filled neck wrap for a couple of years. Walmart for less than $5. keep it in the cooler until she needs it. She drinks at least 32oz of water the morning of a game. My brother is a paramedic and said they cool the core by putting the hands in cold water when they need to treat heat stroke.

My DD catches almost every game. I make sure she pre-hydrates. I make her drink a large bottle of water before the game starts and keep her drinking through out the game. Alot of times I see girls pouring water on their heads and it makes them feel cooler, so they don't drink as much. Make sure what ever you get to make them feel cooler, they keep drinking plenty of water.

keeping the wrist and neck cool helps lower the core temp. quickly because of circulation.
