For what its worth, my AD contacted OHSAA for me to get an answer on when a player has to stop working with her travel team, and here was the reply....

Shayne,

You will not get a specific date for this......these teams can continue to practice/play until your first scrimmage/preview/regular season game that the player becomes involved as a member of your team.

John Dickerson, OHSAA.......by telephone (2/29/08)

See you,
Tom

John Dickerson is an Assistant Commisioner for the OHSAA.

Can a pitcher coninue to work with her professional piching instructor (professional being described as PAID) during the High School season?
Question number 2
If the answer to the above is yes can she continue to have that instruction if her instructor is also her travel ball coach?

The girl can receive instruction from a paid coach during the season. However, in my opinion, you cross the line when you bring in the affiliation with the travel team.

If challenged I am not sure anyone could point to a specific rule that spells this out definitively, however I also believe the ties to the team would take precedence in OHSSA's interpretation of the rule.

The question is, "Why risk the girl?s eligibility and possible sanctions against her high school team?"

Again, just my opinion.

I am not a pitching instructor so this does not apply to me. However I know others that this would apply to and ask for feedback for their sake. Thanks Rattlers for your reply and good luck this season coach.

My computer is acting up, so I cannot cut and paste today. ? This is covered under 1-4-2.
I will let someone else respond, but I don't think it makea a difference if it's her travel ball coach , who just so happens to be her pitching coach, as long as you are following 1-4-2.

SB,

I think the that OHSSA would be more likely to cite the 10-3-1 rule in this situation.

Lightning Coach,

You are welcome and thanks, we will definitely be able to use some luck, LOL.

10-3-1 Is under the TEAM section. This is not a team taking a lesson. I will let Joe or Shayne respond, but I still feel 1-4-2 is the corrrect rule. Many players take lessons all year long and go to clinics..

Not trying to be argumentative, but...............

By-Law 10 is "NON-INTERSCHOLASTIC PARTICIPATION"

Section 10-3 is "PLAYING ON A NON-INTERSCHOLASTIC TEAMS"

and 10-3-1 states (I made bold the relevant wording, in my mind, if the pitching coach is in fact the coach of the travel team (non-interscholastic team) that I feel where the OHSAA could "hang their hat" as far as an infraction.

10-3-1 "A member of an interscholastic squad sponsored by the Board of Education or other governing board shall not participate in a contest, tryouts or any type of training or practices on a non-interscholastic squad or as an individual in a team sport (See Bylaw 10-3-4), in the same sport during the school?s interscholastic sports season."

I believe this because you would have a hard time arguing and proving the separation of the pitcher and coach as individuals from their affiliation with the rest of the "squad" for this situation.

It might be possible to prove, but I return to my first point, "Why risk it?"

You'll have a hard time going through the Bylaws and trying to cover every scenario, that could arise, and picking which Bylaw covers what. ?I believe, that in the above situation, you would be fine with OHSAA, provided you are taking your pitching instruction in a "private" setting and not in a team/group setting.
