Everything you want to know about being a successful coach and producing successful players has been given to you all. I don't have a clue how to post a video here, but one has already been posted for you on this forum. The video about Mike Stith is the answer to what coaches have been pursuing here for years and have come up horribly short of reaching it.

You all want to know the secret that Californians have to be a great softball state. ....It is in the video. You want to be able to have winning teams....it is in the video. You want those big scholarships....it is in this video. He's telling you the pathway to getting a winning team, with well trained athletes. He doesn't give you the knowledge of "how to teach the game", but he does tell you the steps to success if you are looking for real success in this sport.

While many people are busy whining about taking all types of lessons and asking why California is kicking butt all the time, the Californians are busy doing what they need to do to get those top scholarships. Just look at how many California players are on teams from Cali to N.Y. They are taking money away from your players and your kids because you are busy trying to win games at all costs and playing game after game after game. They are giving those kids the training necessary to be successful and to reach their goals and dreams.

Coaching is the key here. If each player is trained well in the mechanics of the game you will have a stronger team and the wins will happen as they should. Playing a hundred games a summer is NOT a training tool for the basics of the game. Games are for using those tools and gaining experience for a better mental game. Learning toughness, learning an the intrinsics of the game is learned, but not basics.

I attended an 18U tournament a year ago in the fall. I sat there watching the games and finally realized that those 18's were still making the same errors and lack of knowledge of the game as they did as 12 year olds. They played hundreds of games, but they never learned how to field the ball, throw the ball, or work as a smooth team unit of the field. It was sad to see. This was not a rec tournament, it was an extremely sad, eye awakening tourney. Many of those players started out with big dreams of possibly getting to play in college, some probably reached those goals, but I could see that many more did not.

So again, if you listen to this video, it will give you the answer to what we need to do in Ohio. Learn the game. Teach the game. Don't worry about the wins. Wins will happen while the kids are having a good time and playing with the proper skills and knowledge of the game.

So if you would rather whine about having to take extra fielding lessons, or hitting lessons, or pitching lessons, or catching lessons then you don't get to whine about all the errors in that 4th inning of the game, or that the Lasers are beating your butt all the time. Because I can tell you this...the Cali people don't care. They will be busy running around to lessons and eventually getting those big offers.

Just saying.....

Its a mix of things. Lets look at the top 2 programs from last year, Alabama and Florida. They currently have 38 players between both teams. Only 8 of those 38 are from Cali. Also, Cali has a population of around 38 million and Ohio 11 million. Plus the weather allows for more games year round. Coaching, talent, and playing are all factors. I know Cali has great teams, but they also have bad ones too.
