At NSA states 12u. Runner trying to score from 3rd.Ball, catcher, runner all at the plate at the some time. Catcher holds on makes tag. girl never made it to the plate. Great play by the catcher. runner out. Wait, runner safe. obstruction by the catcher. (ch)ump says you can't block plate without the ball. you make the call.

judgement call. but if the catcher blocked the plate without the ball, it is obstruction and the runner is safe. Maybe he/she saw the runner and catcher make contact before the ball got there. Some umps might let it go if the ball truly got there first.

I'm not an Ump, but its a judgement call by the ump. I think everybody knows the catcher cant block the plate without the ball, but I believe you can if your in the process of making a play. I think its a you had to be there kind of play. In years past this seemed to be a real point of emphasis in NSA.

If the facts given are the case, then the coach should have asked the umpire what he saw. If there is no dispute that the catcher did not block the plate without the ball and that the runner would have been out without obstruction, then you have a protest situation.

In your first post, you claim the catcher, ball, and runner are at the same place at the same time. Now you claim the catcher had the ball and made the tag. Maybe the umpire felt that contact between the runner and catcher occurred just before the catcher caught the ball?

It used to be that way....but they changed the rule about 7-8 years ago. Being set up to receive a throw does not excuse a fielder from obstructing a runner (unless you're playing NCAA ball).

Ball in Hand rule? Or something like that?

I don't think this is a why or what would cause the umpire to call this post...it's a check out this horrible call by the ump post.

I saw the play from sidelines down the third baseline. In my opinion the ball was there before the runner and the runner was clearly out.

We had a play this weekend, girl up to bat runner on first, 0-0 count on the batter. Batter swings and misses, runner goes. Batter walks across homeplate causing my catcher to step to side, batter walks all the way to the other batters box my catcher double pumps and then instead of just holding the ball throws the ball over the batters head into the outfield. The catcher made the throw from outside the left batters box originally she was set up inside to the right handed batter. Ump calls time as I'm walking out to talk to him about it and talks to his partner before I can say a word. Calls the runner out. Other team's parents, mostly the grandparents are going crazy. One is removed. Their coaches are politely arguing the call, they drop at the next batter...parents are harping on the ump about that call for the next 4 innings....I would hate to be an umpire.

It's coach's responsibility to "hush" his parents, grandparents, whatever..... maybe not under sanctioning bodies.. but as coach. Let's all make the umpire mad at our team because you keep harping on him.

This is why wish EVERY TD in Ohio would go to this tournament rule.

"Coaches are responsible for the conduct of their parents. If one of their fans is thrown out ... the coach goes, too."

Stop a lot of the stupid stuff .. especially from some of these parents that have no clue about rules.

" I would hate to be an umpire".....

Great statement !!!!! Probally half the reason so many umpires are giving it up and the "pool of umpires" is getting smaller and smaller each year.

It's been a hard year for me not to argue with umps hahah, there is an ump that calls my girls for leaving early a few times a game. The rocker step throws him off, I've watched a few girls he's called for leaving early and IMO they left late...not early. I'm going to have a stroke if I have him anymore this year hahaha

@ Uber.... :lmao:

You would think if a coach asked him to look at the "rocker step" a little closer... he would do that.

Left foot on the bag.. right foot behind it and is the first step.... The runner is not off the bag early because she took the first step with her right foot.

I feel for you, Uber. :)

"Coaches are responsible for the conduct of their parents. If one of their fans is thrown out ... the coach goes, too."

I know where your heart is but I think this would be a really bad rule. If the coach and her/his staff is acting appropriately it would be harsh treatment for the players to throw out their coach based on a parent's conduct. The Buckeye Heat as an organization sends out written materials to its parents setting standards for conduct that are way above any danger of a parent getting tossed. And the Buckeye Heat 95 parents have responded by modifying what was already acceptable fan conduct. But if one of them should go ballistic and get tossed, why should a respectful coaching staff also get penalized? Team will have been penalized enough by having blues that aren't likely to give any close calls to our team and at least one player who is mortified that a parent got tossed.

Maybe a more effective rule would be that if a parent gets tossed, her or his kid is out for the rest of the game. But I still wouldn't agree with that rule.

And of course the bottom line is that coaches should educate their parents in the boundaries of appropriate conduct because nothing good can come for the team who has a parent tossed. And really nothing good can come for the team who has a parent harassing an umpire to a point just short of getting tossed. But just as in so many other walks of life, good education doesn't always translate into the proper conduct. When it doesn't, I believe the punishment should remain on the actor and not those whose conduct was above reproach.

I have seen that rule in place at a few events... and they ran smoothly. Not one lick of problem.

I don't agree on a parent getting thrown out and the family player going to. Why punish the girl .

Until coaches have that "control" over their parents ... even with the code of conduct rule by the org itself..... I think it is the best rule ever personally.

I was at one event... doing ground rules at the plate... told the coaches that rule... one coach says , " Excuse me, why I go to one of my parents about this rule ".

Coach preceeded to tell the parent the rule... more or less laid down the ground rules about if I get tossed because of you... came back to the plate and said, " Thanks" and smiled.

I agree with that comment on umps not seeing the rocker step correctly. Had the same problem with my dd, umps were warning her about being early and i was seeing her be on time or even a tad late. Now thats frustrating.

I just found this :D

Oklahoma City Daily Bee
July 3, 2011

Immediate News Release from Amateur Softball Association.

Due to the onslaught of parents calling about umpiring, the ASA has developed the following policy. Effective immediately, all ASA youth tournaments will have to have 3 cameras installed at each ball field that is use for play. These cameras will be used to monitor umpire, coach, player, and spectator behavior. The location of these cameras will be disclosed in a separate news release soon.

High definition cameras will be used. The video from these cameras can be used to official protest an umpire?s call, except for pitching location calls. The video will also be used to determine penalties for unruly coaches, players, and spectators. A team can protest one call per game. Please remember that once you use your protest, your pitcher's strike zone just shrunk to the size of a coffee can.

To offset the incurred cost of the cameras and the installation, Tournament Directors are granted authority to add an additional $500 to each team's registration fee for the tournament.

The beatings will continue until morale improves. That is all.
