Question about College eligibility...

I know a lot of kids take a few classes at their high school and the rest at a local college before they have graduated High School, and I was just curious as to if this effected their eligibility to play sports in college. Any info on this subject would be great lol.

I checked into this for my DD last year. Most high school courses are approved and certified to be accepted by the NCAA as far as credit requirements. The different college divisions have different requirements to be eligible to play as a freshman coming in. Our HS guidance counselor did not know if the NCAA would recognize a college course taken while in high school. The NCAA does not count high school courses taken while in junior high towards these credits even if taught by a high school teacher. We decided not to risk it and have problems later. Our HS counselor recommended staying with the high school courses only. There are advantages to a HS student taking college courses while in HS, mainly getting college credits for free. The downfall is a young HS student mixed in with 20 somethings and missing part of their HS experience and friends their age. I think most high schools have challenging enough classes with AP and honors courses to prepare them for college. We decided not to mess with our DD taking college courses because we didn't want her to miss out on her senior year at the HS and didn't want any issues with her being eligible to play sports in college. She has taken honors and AP courses that have been challenging and prepared her for the next step in her education. Everyone is different and are in different situations, but I believe my DD is very happy staying at the HS. She has plenty of time to enjoy college and the pressures it brings in the next 4 to 6 years.

In SWPA, at least at our school, you can take classes at the High School that count as college credit. I guess I should check out the impact of that as well.....never thought about it before.

I was under the impression, at least where my son is concerned, that any college credits obtained this way were only good at the college he took the courses at. Therefore, if he went away to college he would have to take the courses again anyway. IMO it isn't worth risking eligibility for that.

DD did this and we were fortunate enough that the classes were actually taught @ our High School by College certifide teachers....she did this and fully participated in her High School activities....the plus side was that between her AP classes , Honors classes , and Post secondary classes she was able to start college with enough credits that by the time she started her second semester on Jan 5 she is a sophomore according to her transcripts. The down side is her college coach has expressed concern that she be able to maintain a fulltime schedule for 4 years to keep her eligible to play... Good problem to have,LOL She is looking into an logical Minor to take in addition to her Major...premed ....that will help her achieve her ultimate goal...

It does not affect their eligibility as they are not enrolled as a full time student AND the grades are usually posted on their high school transcript. Many high school seniors do this. It's usually called "dual enrollment".

Hey LUV: I might suggest a minor in Nutrition if it's offered.

It does not affect their eligibility. DD has 14 college credits and all will transfer with her from her present post secondary classes to her college she will attend. She will have a full four years of athletic eligibility. Her fourth year she will be in post grad studies. If all goes well and I can keep that fire under her!
