Depends....If the batter is Jeter and you're playing in Yankee's Stadium, it's a hit. Everybody else - fielders choice.

Okay, I re-read it and I now say Fielders Choice. My initial take on it was not correct.

It does depend. If, in the scorekeepers opinion, the pitcher could have got the out at first, then it is a fielders choice. It is conceivable that on a high chop back to the mound, that the pitcher might not have been able to make a play on a speedy batter. Most of the time though this would be a fielder's choice.

Does the pitcher run the 3rd base runner back with no throw or throw the ball. My scorekeeper says he writes if ball is thrown to get 3rd base runner;batter gets fielders choice. If pitcher doesn't release ball in direction of 3rd base runner and just runs them back; batter gets a hit.

NCAA scoring guidelines are available in their on-line rule book (see link). See section 14 of the book.

http://www.ncaa.org/library/rules/2007/2007_softball_rules.pdf

According to these guidelines, on this play it is scorekeeper judgement on whether or not the batter would have been safe or out if the throw had gone to first insted of third. Of course, if the runner at third had been put out, then you have a fielder's choice. But when the put out attempt on a preceding runner is unsuccessful, you revert back to scorekeeper judgement on ruling the hit.

For anyone interested, here is a link to another scoring guide that I use. Very comprehensive and in all instances I've come across it agrees with the NCAA guidelines.

http://nfca.org.ismmedia.com/ISM2/MultimediaManager/ATEC.pdf

Between these two guides, you should be able to answer just about any possible scorekeeping question.

I like the ATEC guide, but I reformatted it to fix the identation formatting and make it easier to print.

The original is 66 pages long and the Microsoft Word version I "fixed" is only 20 pages.

If anyone wants it PM me, I'd be happy to share.
