Scorebook question..

was it a bunt that 2B charged and booted, if so then I could see it scored sac. If it was just a normal hit ball then it was just E4, no such thing as a sac ground ball.

Most likely should scored a RBI though if runner was going at contact and not after the error.

I never heard of a slap sac either. If you can't get out fouling it off on strike 3, no SAC. (I just made that up).

Yeah Tony, I made that up. It is a CRAZY as a SAC grounder. Just trying to add a little humor. If there is not a button for it in iScore then it is not legit to me.

At some time prior to 2012, NCAA used to credit sacrifices on slaps if the slapper made a modification. It still appears in the NCAA's statistics manual even though it has been removed from the regular rule book.

14.9.3 When modifications are not made to the running slapper's swing or motion.
Notes:
1. Modifications could include, but are not limited to, the following: sacrifice motion, a controlled compact swing, a pause in the running slapper?s motion or a reduction of foot speed.
2. Scoring for the left-handed running slapper should be the same as for a traditional left- or right-handed batter. If the running slapper clearly shows the intent to advance a base runner, credit a sacrifice. If modifications are not made to the running slapper?s swing or motion, charge an at-bat, even if a base runner advances.

This was replaced with:

If the running slapper clearly shows the intent to advance a base runner by bunting, credit a sacrifice. If the running slapper slaps or swings, charge an at-bat, even if a base runner advances.

So is that a drag bunt?

...was it a bunt that 2B charged and booted, if so then I could see it scored sac...

The original post said that the batter-runner reached first. If there's no out it is not scored SAC, at least not if a proper book is being kept in accordance with NFHS rules and ATEC. The batter's intent or attempt don't change E to SAC.

Andrew ... not sure I understand your question, but let me try to paraphrase it as I understand it and see if that answers your question and see if SoCal Dad can confirm it for me as well ... when a slapper does her full slapper swing, she gets no sacrifice if a runner happens to advance, same as any other non-slapper. If however, she does something with her swing (pauses it, compacts it, etc.) that shows her intent was to advance the runner, then it would be the same as a sacrifice bunt.

You don't penalize the batter for the defense making an error on a successfully executed sac bunt. The correct scoring depends on the circumstances of the error. Since you mentioned ATEC, here is their applicable rule on it.

Score a sacrifice bunt
1. when with less than two outs, a batter advances one or more runners by bunting (include slap or slug bunting and running slaps), and is called out at first base or would have been out had no error occurred,

The plate appearance (PA) is recorded as Sac and the batter-runner reached on the error. A similar thing happens if the defense makes an unsuccessful attempt (errorless) on a runner - PA is Sac and B-R reached via FC.

If they would have retired the runner had no error occurred, the PA would be FC and the runner advanced on the error.

I love all the grey areas. Stuff like this makes being a scorekeeper challenging. It is a thankless job as nobody ever says anything good when they agree with the way you scored it, but they always let you know when they disagree.

Correct regarding the old rule, but that is no longer in the full rule book. The statistics manual is supposed to be an excerpt of the regular rules, but they apparently missed making that rule change in it.

The current rule allows scoring a sac for a drag bunt, but not if they are obviously bunting for a hit in a situation in which a sacrifice is not normally used.
