Refund

With all of the rainouts happening this year and some kids paying high pay for play dollars, do you think the schools should refund some of the money?

Unless your going to get the coaches to refund their salary I'd say no. Only about 1/4" of the the cost of playing goes to games. Probably $2000 in ump fees a year another $2000 in league and transportation costs. Head coach and one assistant are probably around $8K combined.

I would doubt a refund would be offered also. I would think at best maybe a reduction in the next year due to leftover funds in the account.

Weather is not something anyone has control over. It's a normal thing to have rain in spring. Not ususally this much rain, but it's something everyone knows is possible going in. I'm not one that's in a high pay to play school, maybe I'd have a different point of view if I'd paid travel ball fees to play.

The operative word here is "should". Should they? Yes. Will they? No

Our school states that the fees promise practice time and wearing the uniform. They specifically state that it doesn't guarantee any playing time. Now I know this rule was brought up because of girls that continually sit the bench during games, but I know that thet can bring this up for all the rain outs as well since we our practicing everyday.

Discounted for next year? I like that-I mean we are not using the umps nor the buses. Will it happen? probably not.

Our school system may have to go to "pay to participate" next year. I have seen some of the cost for it on here from different schools. Bieng a travel ball parent I don't know if I will be able, or have the desire, to pay for both experiences due to the cost. That being said does anyone beleive that more TB teams will be popping up, coming from not playin for HS team? due to both cost?

This also includes players who have not played TB, would the money you spend on HS ball be better off used for TB experience? more games, longer period for practices, and in most cases better training? Now before you get your undies' in a bunch I said "MOST CASES", we all know the conflict that statement will bring.

To me the HS ball is great don't get me wrong, but if I have to chose its TB hands down. I was just wondering if there are any thoughts of this out there.

On the sidebar: If more TB teams are popping up due to this, it would be a good idea to get TB orgs together and maybe have leagues with other TB orgs that are close in location. This will help in defining the best in Ohio as well.

Sheesh Slappy, feeling a bit snippy today? BucketBrigade's slight detour is mild compared to some of the hijacks this Board has seen. He or she is at least talking about issues raised by the recent movement to pay to participate and pay to participate was the source of the original post. And now that I look closer, you weren't even the initial poster on this thread. Maybe you could have raised the hijack issue with a gentler suggestion that a new thread be started?

Folks dont get wound to tight on the subject. In 4 years this is defiantly the worst we have witnessed in HS ball. But believe me I have seen TB seasons that were shortened worse. Its just a case of a freak spring causing havoc. It will be over soon

As far as money goes, coaching pay doesn't come out of money collected from pay to play. Coaches are under contract with the school district and schools are not supposed to pay for coaching contracts with money collected by students paying fees.
I don't think kids are charged per game either. I think it is a fee to cover costs of uniforms, travel, umpires, field maint., etc.
Not a school finance expert, but as a school employee, I do know there is a 'law' or 'rule' about school money and coaches. Boosters are not allowed to pay for assistant coaches anymore either.
Northmont's fees are pretty reasonable, and with three kids playing a total of 6 sports, it is nice to get a break financially. We spend quite a bit of money going to basketball and football games during the school year. Personally, I think it stinks I have to pay to watch my kid play ball.

That brings up a good point. Has any of the "pay to participate" schools offered the paying parents a season pass for the sport which they are paying for ? Not a bad idea and would still generate income from other spectators. Just a thought.
