WOW, you have GOT to be kidding!

Competition was great for sure, solid teams from many locations.

Collectively, the umpiring was the worst I have ever seen at any tournament I've been to in eight years of travel ball. The strike zones were almost comical in at least half the games we played. In one game we had an opposing player take a full swing and the ump call a ball. Appealed to the field ump was standing between 2B-3B and simply said "I'm in the middle". Which means I think he was also asleep. So, a ball called. In another game, a girl hit a home run and was called out for not wearing chin strap. In yet another game, tournament rules were question and the ump said, "I don't know, I didn't read the tournament rules". Hey why would you!!?? We did have a COUPLE of good umpires, but I would certainly recommend the tournament directors make a better effort to get better umpiring.

Heavy rains Thursday and Friday put the fields in a mess, but the effort to recover was abysmal at best. By late Saturday, we were still playing on fields with huge ruts in play and "dead zones" behind 1B. Not to mention..the main fields at the pavilion have the pitchers throwing up hill and are all full of random dips in the surface.

My experience was just the opposite. In the 7 games we played, we had very consistent umpires. Some of the best in the last 2 years. It is my understanding that a group of umpires was brought in from out of state

With the amount of rain that they had on Thursday (4-5 inches) I was supprised that we played at all on Friday. We have been to all to many tournaments where the almightly dollar is more thought of than playing the game. The last 2 years other tournaments let mother nature dry the field. Last week in Toledo no work was done on the fields for 1.5 days. Most of the games were cancelled. At Sluggerfest they started turning over the fields at 6:00 A.M. on Friday morning and brought in over 100 bags of quick dry to help speed the process. Were the fields in great shape, no. Were they playable, yes. Beats sitting in a hotel room for a day and a half waiting for mother natue to dry things out.

I would highly recommend this tournament to everyone. Competion was also first rate.

I have to agree on the umpiring front. We had an umpire in our final elimination game who appeared to me and many who witnessed it to have intentionally thrown our game twice. An umpire is supposed to be FAIR and IMPARTIAL...above the frey! They must be of good charachter and have integrity to be credible in this sport. We all know that umpires are going to miss a hard call here and there and we expect that. I run a rec organization in my town with 26 teams and 320 players. We have a crew of umpires and I know they are going to make some mistakes on occasion...nobody is perfect.

We had no less than five bad calls in our final elimination game alone...all went against us! 1) A left handed slapper on my team was called out by plate umpire after getting a hit for supposedly stepping on the plate...showed her the footprints to no avail! 2) Field ump calls a runner from the opposing team safe before she even arrived at third base when the ball was there waiting for the players slide and she slid right into it...she wouldnt allow the plate umpire to help nor was the plate umpire willing to...she ignored us. 3) Field ump calls a player out at first in a tie (can live with that one...happens alot) 4) Field ump calls a player out at first in regulation play with two outs and the winning run on third when the ball didnt arrive until both my players feet were already past the base...not even close (cannot live with that one!) 5) Field ump calls a player out in extra innings in the exact same two out scenerio with the winning run on third and the runner beyond the bag before the ball arrived...I was thrown out of the game after protesting that call...I had to finally stand up for my girls! I was not going to sit there and just let them be robbed of the game yet again. I was told that this specific umpire does some DII collegiate games...WOW!!!

After the game was over and we finally lost in the 4th inning of international tie break I went in and brought this to the attention of the UIC and Patty. I hope my input was taken constructively. We all want to be invited to play in the best tournaments and this is definitely one of them...GREAT competition! We just want to make sure that the umpires match the event. Over all I would say they likely did as I saw many of the same umpires that we saw at Music City Hits a couple of weeks ago at Sluggerfest and that was a great event.

Patty does this out of her love for the sport and the girls who play it so well. I appreciate all that she does for the game and our Cincy Metro teams specifically. I would definitely recommend this tournament with the caveat that I never have that field umpire again...lol!

Hmmm... Saw that game, and there were a couple interesting;& calls. Field ump appeared to be in the proper position to make the calls - might not have gotten them right, but she was in the right position - and therefore an appeal to the plate umpire wasn't really something that was going to happen. As to you getting thrown out, let's just say you may have been a little over zealous in your approach given the situation.

BTW - If you liked her field work, you'd have loved her behind the plate (had her there for my last 2).

I can imagine what she would be like behind the plate...lol! Yeah, a bit over zealous but we did win the game twice before losing because of her...lol. I wanted to put a little dirt on the plate to show my disgust...thats why I only kicked one time...lol.

I have only been thrown out of two games in all of my years of coaching girls. The other one was when first base was awarded to my player because she was hit on the bottom of her foot as she jumped up to get out of the way of the ball. The umpire changed his mind and brought her back because he said she did not make "enough" of an attempt...any attempt is enough! It hit the bottom of her foot for goodness sakes. Anyway, it was him me and the other teams coach in a huddle at third base and my response to his explanation was that it was BS. He walked back behind the plate and I resumed my spot at third base and as the pitcher began her wind up he called time. He then walked back down to third base and said " Your out of here for using profanity". I told him it was three men in the huddle with no kids in earshot...he said it was the rule?

I must agree with PurpleJack.
The absolute worst. In our last game the lady behind the plate dropped the "F" bomb on me after I asked her how in the world my runner coming from first base was called out for interfering with the short stop fielding a hard hit ground ball. Now I have had some fast kids, but none quite that fast. Not real professional if you ask me.

I watched one lady ump that was more interested in her nails and shirt than what was going on in the field of play.
She missed calls and when asked on an appeal she just shrugged.
The home plate ump was correcting her on something and she just waved her off as if to say I don't care and really don't want to here it.
That was on our game Saturday nite.

Might as well join in as both of my daughter's teams (different organizations) had this woman in consecutive weekends at the 16s and then the 18s. During the 16s she was working the field and made bad call after bad call. These calls were against both teams and definitely affected play. By the sixth inning she literally stopped making calls. There were two calls at first, one at third where she wouldn't make a call. After several seconds of standing there the homeplate umpire would then make the call. At the end of the game ,a two out situation with the tying run at second, a ball was hit behind short. The centerfielder dove for the ball and appeared to be juggling it when she rolled over it. The umpire standing 10 feet away refused to make the call. After about 20 seconds the homeplate umpire called out and the game over. We thought that this woman had a heat stroke-seriously- as it was very hot and humid during the 16s Sluggerfest and she had been out there all day. It appears that she is just that bad as I saw it repeated the next day and at the 18s Sluggerfest. Which by the way, she missed calls the other way as well in the game pointed out by Cincy Static although they had more than the other team. Was an observer of this game and it is a shame the way the game was called. How does a slapper who flicks a ball foul down the left field line past third get rung up for a third strike on a bunted foul? Patty should seriously do something about that umpire as it was not a one game, one day or one weekend occurrence. It happened both weekends I was there from this umpire.

It took me almost 25 minutes to get a water at the consession stand on friday(since it is forbidden to bring in coolers). Our kids needed water, so when I saw the line was about 40 people deep, I went to the van filled the cooler with gaterade and water and rolled it in. I was stopped at the gate by the gate keeper and she started telling me that I had to take my cooler back to the car. After about a 2 minute 1 sided conversation about how their consession stands stunk and how it was 90 freaking degrees and "I couldn't take bottled water in the park for our kids"..........I went in the park with my cooler. About 5 minutes after that I noticed they came out and had a seperate line for water and other drinks. Now I dont have a problem with not bringing a cooler in but be more organized with your consession stand so when a girl on our team needs a water or a gaterade in the 3rd inning on a 90 degree humid day, I dont have to wait till the bottom of the 4th or 5th to give it to her.

Great competition.

Terrible field conditions...

I have to agree with the posts about the ump comments. For the most part, the umps were down right aweful. Although, when we faced the Elite Saturday, the ump was yelling HE HE as the called third strike. Funniest I have ever heard! :lmao:

The Kentucky Outlaws have a nice organization. I was very impressed with both their players and their coaches.
