[Softball] No. 1 Drovers Rally Late to Push Win Streak to 42 Games

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (35-0, 22-0 SAC) remained perfect as they swept the double-header at Mid-America Christian University (13-11, 8-9 SAC) on Monday afternoon. The top ranked Drovers were able to take game one with a 7-0 shutout, followed by a thrilling 6-3 win in game two.

GAME 1 –

The No. 1 Drovers and Evangels received strong pitching performances for the first 5 innings of the game, but USAO got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning as they drove in 4 runs. The defending champs added a trio of runs in the seventh inning to close out the win.

Emily Cerny (SO/Newcastle, OK) picked up her eighth shutout of the year so far, as she went all 7 innings and struck out 11 batters in the victory. Earlier on Monday afternoon, the Sooner Athletic Conference announced that Cerny had earned her fourth straight Pitcher of the Week award, and it is also the seventh straight week that a USAO pitcher has earned the award. The star sophomore has a 14-0 record with a 0.44 ERA, and 143 strikeouts in 79 innings pitched.

Destinie Lookout (SR/Oklahoma City, OK) had a huge game at the plate, going 2-4 with a double, triple, run scored, and a run batted in. Randa Hatter (JR/Stratford, OK) finished the win with a pair of singles and a pair of RBI's. Kristen Prieto (JR/Moore, OK) drove in a couple of runs as she concluded 1-3 with a run scored. Karlie Velasco (SR/Del City, OK) stayed hot at the dish, going 2-3 with a run score. Velasco has recorded 13 hits in her last 26 at bats. Dakota Clouse (SR/Blancahard, OK) went 1-3 and scored twice, while Karmyn Pearn (SO/Newcastle, OK) went 1-3 with a RBI.

GAME 2 –

No. 1 USAO jumped out to an early lead with one run in the top of the second inning, followed by another pair of runs in the fourth inning. The Evangels cut into the Drovers lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as they scored a trio of runs. With the score tied 3-3 going into the seventh inning, USAO rallied for three runs to take a 6-3 lead. Lyndie Ervin (FR/Washington, OK) pitched a scoreless bottom half of the inning to close out the game.

Emily Cerny pitched a scoreless first inning for the Drovers. Falon Howell (SO/Duncan, OK) pitched the next 2.1 innings, prior to being relieved by Lyndie Ervin. Ervin earned the win as she pitched the final 3.2 innings of the game, allowing zero runs and striking out a pair of batters.

Kristen Prieto led the USAO offense, going 2-4, with a pair of doubles, a run scored, and a run batted in. Darci Chester (SO/Collinsville, OK) finished 1-1 with a run scored and 2 RBI's, while Karmyn Pearn went 1-1 with a double and 2 RBI's. Tarah Madron (JR/Konawa, OK) contributed a 1-4 performance, which included a run scored and a RBI. Karlie Velasco extended her hitting streak to 6 games as she hit a single in the win. Dakota Clouse and Destinie Lookout each added singles in the win.

The No. 1 Drovers will be back in action on Tuesday, April 2 when they host Southwestern Christian University at 4 and 6 PM at Bill Smith Ballpark.
