Strangest Things to Happen in Softball

This can be anything strange, happy or sad. Mine's a doozy! The funniest things in softball thread got me thinking about this one. Don't want to be a downer on a happy thread so I'll start this one.

About 5 years ago my buddy (Al) was playing in a men's slowpitch league. He gets on first base. Someone hits a screamer in the outfield gap. As Al rounds 3rd base to go home, the 3rd baseman drops dead of a heart attack!!:eek:
I mean, he was literally right there when it happened. They tried to revive him but to no avail. It freaked Al out so much that for months he had chest pains and worried about having a heart attack. Al was in his early 30s at the time. I'm pretty sure that the guy was under forty. Poor guy!:(

This one is on the sad side of things. Last year dds team had a young lady on her team the jammed her ankle sliding and injured it pretty badly. Parents and coaches where in a tizzy about having her ready for the up coming weekend tournament. (Homerun hitter and third base) Parent drove her about an hour away to see doctor who did some kind of rubberband therapy to loosen the ankle. She didnt attend any practices that week but come weekend she played and every time she got on base all weekend long you could see the tears just rolling down her face from the pain. Sad and scary at the same time that anyone would push a child to that extent.

Seen two...

Men's League throw from first to third, pitcher didn't duck cut his ear in half...

Tournament slow pitch-- catcher had to wear a mask. Guy wouldn't wear it, ump said on your head or don't play. Guy put it on backwards said there you go it's on my head... Game on...

The ear thing ..yeah.Pretty gross. I just know someone on the corner is going to eat it and cause severe damage. Why do we wait until it's too late to make it mandatory to wear a mask on 3rd???

I have to say one of the strangest things I have seen was probably this past August at a local tryout, there was a mom who stood behind the backstop just making fun of kids etc real classless stuff this was at the 18U level.

That's a quick interview of the parents/player. . .No Go!

Makes one wonder how the mother was able to justify such actions to herself. . .

How would a facemask help a third baseman not have their ear hit by a ball? I am under the impression that the ears are not protected by a Gameface.

I think all the players on the field should wear batting helmets with facemasks, shin guards, elbow pads, forearm pads, kevlar lined batting gloves, 2 chest protectors - one for the front, one for the back and be encapsulated in an environmentally controlled bubble....

One of the strangest things I have wittnessed happened a couple of years ago. I was coaching a 14-U rec. team and a young lady that I had playing in right field threw out back-to-back runners in the same inning. Not that the 9-3 PO is rare but back-to-back. Funny thing was we had just covered that play the night before in practice and she executed it to perfection. Needless to say she won the game ball that evening.

Hilliarddad,
Have had that same thought playing less experienced teams with a weaker pitcher throwing BP to the middle of the line up. Uncomfortable position to be put in as parent/coach.

My first year at GAPSS saw a 12U pitcher take a line drive to the face (no mask). Strong batter swinging a Rocketech. Pitcher was wearing sunglasses that probably saved alot of damage. She made a quick trip to hospital and was back playing in the afternoon. We have some tough dd's!

whitehall tourney, playing rob wear's doom team, and if u've played rob, u know it's just weird anyway...so we're coming back from 2 runs down(thanks to some great errors by DD, thank u very much), makin a rally, rob is up n arms...then suddenly a storm cloud blows over..we keep playing..some kid drops a bat or something on the bleacher, we all cleared out of there like someone had just spilled the plague on the mound...after some discussion, we got back into the game, and the lightning did strike, game done

At our first official practice this season, I noticed the girls in the outfield were VERY distracted by something off of the field. Myself and the other coaches walked to the edge of the grass in center field and saw what the major distraction was.
A HUGH HOT AIR BALLOON right at the top of the trees that lined the field!!!
The gentleman at the controls of the Balloon shouted "DROP THE BAT AND GRAB THE BASKET", I just stood there in shock, Again he shouted "DROP THE BAT AND GRAB THE BASKET". I finally realized that he was shouting at ME!!! I dropped the bat that I was leaning on and started running towards the Balloon!!! He very calmly shouted "AS SOON AS THE BASKET LANDS, JUMP OVER THE EDGE OF THE BASKET AND PUT ALL OF YOUR WEIGHT ON THE SIDE." I am happy to say that although the Hot Air Balloon landed with a little bit of a jolt that everyone was safe and sound. :yahoo:
