It can be very situational of course - many major leaguers (extremely polished hitters) rely on the game within the game with the pitcher and take multiple pitches to "see what they have" on THAT particular day, make them work, and gain knowledge which may help later at critical points in game (Pete Rose approach). Relatively speaking there may be some hitters at that level in amateur ball, but reality is that you get 3 swipes at a good pitcher - USE 'EM. Be aggressive, and stroll up to the plate BEGGING the pitcher to make a mistake and put it over the plate from pitch one.
