Some people may disagree with this, but I think it's important that travel teams are made up of girls who have similar skill levels for several reasons, and that's why some organizations hold out for someone at the right (i.e., same) level. This has many advantages. For a coach, it's similar to a teacher in a classroom. If the kids are at about the same level, you don't have to move/instruct at the pace of the slowest child ... and I bet that if you're a parent with one of the kids at a higher level, you don't want that either. Plus if your child is by far the best on the team, chances are you're still not going to be happy because the team will either do poorly playing against competition at your child's level, or do well playing weaker teams but your kid's not going to get any better doing that. Similarly, if your child is behind the others, you're probably looking at a situation where they are going to end up riding the bench more than everyone else, and you and they are not going to be happy with that.
The good news is that there's hundreds of different teams and organizations out there, and I think there's a level for everyone. And while it's noble to think that somehow organizations could share a database of un-committed players, there are numerous issues with that, not the least of which is privacy.
